It's so easy to get caught up in winning clients and outdoing the competition that we sometimes forget the essence of human connection and collaboration. Your reminder is timely. Collaborative efforts often lead to better solutions and innovation. Attend industry events or meet-ups with an open mind. Engage in genuine conversations—not just about business, but also about common challenges and aspirations. Sometimes, a shared struggle can bridge gaps. Remember, success isn't a finite resource; there's room for everyone to thrive. Let's build a business community that supports and uplifts each other.

A few years ago, (pre-Covid) I attended a conference organised by the NADSN - National Association of Disabled Staff Networks, and it stands out as the most inclusive event I’ve ever experienced. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that a lot of thought had gone into making everyone feel comfortable. We were all given coloured lanyards - red, amber, or green - indicating how comfortable we were with social interaction. Such a simple, yet effective way to communicate without words. There was also a breakout room, available for anyone feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated, offering a quiet space to relax and recharge. And all items on the menu were gluten-free, dairy free, vegan and halal, ensuring everyone’s needs were met. As a neurodivergent person, I found this level of inclusivity incredibly refreshing and practical and it incorporated many of the aspect of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) which I love because it focuses on removing barriers and designs inclusion so it is embedded in every day practice. It’s such a powerful reminder that events can be designed to accommodate diverse needs, making a huge difference to the people attending because people feel welcomed and seen.
