In the U.S., the general public is most likely to come into contact with police during traffic stops, and, particularly for people of color, these encounters can turn deadly. Since 2017, more than 800 people have been killed by officers after being pulled over, according to statistics from the Mapping Police Violence database. This alarming trend underscores the urgent need for systemic reform in the way law enforcement is conducted on our roadways. Addressing this is a crucial step toward rebuilding the shattered trust between communities of color and law enforcement agencies. New analysis from Advancement Project and Alliance for Educational Justice of 372 assaults 372 police assaults of students from 2011-2023 and offers an analysis of assaults from the last school year, 2022-2023.  Our data reveals the abuses of power police are capable of in our schools, despite false claims that police make students safer. In the last school year, not only were Black students (over 80%) overwhelmingly victims of police assault, over half of the victims were girls. Police sexual violence was the 2nd most frequent type of assault last year. Since 2011, sexual assault has moved up as the third most frequent type of police assault against students. Yet police faced no consequences for harming students in well over half of recorded incidents. Full report here: https://lnkd.in/gQdGB9Qt

The Police Department Research Analysis project investigates various aspects of law enforcement activities through a comprehensive examination of police stop data. The project aims to uncover insights into factors like gender, age, race, and time of day to inform policy decisions and enhance policing practices. Key research questions addressed in the project include: 1. Gender Disparities in Speeding Violations: Analyzing whether men or women are stopped more frequently for speeding violations. 2. Gender's Impact on Police Searches: Investigating if gender influences who gets searched during police stops. 3. Mean Duration of Police Stops: Determining the average duration of police stops to understand the time spent during law enforcement interactions. 4. Age Distribution Across Violations: Exploring how the age distribution varies across different types of violations. 5. Demographic Distribution of Police Stops by Race: Examining the racial demographics of individuals stopped by police. 6. Variations in Police Stops by Day and Month: Analyzing how the number of police stops varies by day of the week and month. 7. Distribution of Police Stops by Time of Day: Investigating the distribution of police stops across different times of the day. The project utilizes a dataset containing detailed information about vehicle stops, including date, time, driver demographics, violation details, search conduct, and stop outcomes. Through data cleaning and transformation, the dataset is prepared for analysis by addressing missing values and restructuring data. Insights from the analysis reveal significant findings: - Disparities in Police Searches by Gender: Men are subjected to searches at a notably higher rate compared to women. - Average Duration of Police Stops: On average, police stops last approximately 11.9 minutes. - Variation in Age Distribution Across Violations: Different types of violations exhibit varying age distributions among drivers. - Racial Demographics of Police Stops: White individuals are most frequently stopped by police, followed by Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Other racial groups. - Temporal Patterns in Police Stops: The busiest time for police stops is during the morning hours, followed by the afternoon, with relatively lower activity during evenings and early mornings. The project concludes with recommendations aimed at enhancing policing practices, including diversifying training programs, improving data collection and reporting, fostering community engagement, implementing accountability measures, and investing in technology and data analytics. These recommendations aim to promote fairness, transparency, and community-centered policing to ensure safer and more inclusive communities for all individuals.

Having meaningful exchanges with community members today is crucial to public trust and confidence in the police, yet the proliferation of ‘whataboutism’ often makes this a difficult or even impossible task. On this day, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of female police officers who work to enforce laws and maintain order throughout the United States. Despite the fact that women account for only 10% of the nation's police force, National Police Women's Day aims to inspire and encourage more women to pursue this noble profession. #juvenilejustice #youthjustice
