I am really looking forward to being back "home" at CTCRM next week to deliver the Practical Project Management Mastery Course to the group of Royal Marines re-settling and hoping to begin their new careers in the project management environment. This practical, hands-on project management course offers several benefits:   Real-world application Hands-on projects providing participants with the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts learned in class to real-life scenarios. This reinforces understanding and helps bridge the gap between theory and practice.   Skill development Participants gain practical experience in project management techniques, tools, and methodologies through hands-on activities. This will help them develop essential skills such as planning, scheduling, budgeting, risk management, and communication.   Problem-solving Hands-on projects often involve encountering and solving real problems that project managers face in their day-to-day work. This fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing participants to handle challenges effectively in their professional roles.   Engagement and motivation Active participation in hands-on projects is much more engaging and motivating for learners compared to passive learning methods. It encourages collaboration, interaction, and teamwork among participants, enhancing the learning experience.   Retention and transfer of knowledge Research and my own experience has shown that hands-on learning leads to better retention of information and skills compared to traditional classroom instruction. Participants are more likely to remember and apply what they have learned when they have practical experience to anchor their knowledge.   Feedback and reflection Hands-on projects provide opportunities for participants to receive feedback on their performance and reflect on their experiences. This feedback loop is essential for continuous improvement and helps participants refine their project management skills over time.   Preparation for real-world challenges By simulating real-world project scenarios, hands-on projects prepare participants to tackle similar challenges they may encounter in their professional careers. CBP SKILLBRIDGE AND VETERANS' PREFERENCE   Please, email me (Jeffrey.R.Jack@cbp.dhs.gov) if you are at least 12 months away from separation and interested in our SkillBridge internship program for STRICTLY non-law enforcement careers. For any federal position, you must be ELIGIBLE for non-competitive hire if ANY federal agency wants to hire you OUTSIDE of USAJOBS. One must also be QUALIFIED for the position. Being ELIGIBLE using your VETERANS’ PREFERENCE does not trump being required to be QUALIFIED for the position. It simply affords U.S. Customs and Border Protection to hire you OUTSIDE of USAJOBS, which is a huge benefit to you and us.    Being ELIGIBLE for non-competitive hire is completely dependent of whether you fall into these THREE non-competitive hiring authorities (i.e. 30% or More Disabled, Schedule A, or VRA – recommend you review these yourself so that you are fully knowledgeable) that the federal government is allowed to use to hire OUTSIDE of USAJOBS.    If you are NOT ELIGIBLE for the aforementioned hiring authorities, we can't hire you non-competitively OUTSIDE of USAJOBS at the end of your SkillBridge internship. How do we establish your ELIGIBILITY? We use one's Statement of Service from your command documenting the campaign awards that qualify you for the VRA hiring authority. VRA allows us to hire you for positions up to the GS-11 pay grade as long as you are also QUALIFIED for the position.   If you are anticipating a VA Disability Rating of 30% or more but have yet to receive this, we use the Schedule A hiring authority. Schedule A allows us to hire up to the GS-15 level OUTSIDE of USAJOBS for those who are also QUALIFIED for the position. Again, VETERANS' PREFERENCE makes one ELIGIBLE for non-competitive hire, however, one must also be QULALIFIED for the position. We perform the aforementioned "Qualifications Review" at the onset of selection to determine this using these documents along with your resume highlighting your experience/education.   Regarding Schedule A, your ability to secure a signed Schedule A Letter is not determined by your military physician it is a right to any U.S. citizen who has severe disabilities to be considered for hire outside of USAJOBS. Since you may not have your VA Disability Rating Letter completed by VA yet, we need that signed Schedule A Letter from your primary care physician, private sector physician, a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Regional Office for Veterans Readiness and Employment, and/or state Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. You can typically google “State Department of Vocational Rehabilitation” for the state you are in and make an appointment with them taking along your medical documentation that identifies you as someone with severe physical or neuropsychiatric disabilities.      Looking forward to assisting you all with SkillBridge placement at CBP so that you can "Go Beyond" with us.   https://lnkd.in/euuQ8-Ns

One piece of advice that we have found to be incredibly valuable is the importance of maintaining a routine. Transitioning from the military can be a major adjustment, having a consistent routine can provide a sense of stability and structure during this period of change. Whether it's setting aside time for morning phys, allocating time for personal development or making a daily schedule, maintaining a routine can help you feel more grounded and in control of your new life Remember that creating and sticking to a routine can be a game-changer as you navigate this transition. 1st August will always be an important day in my life, not just because it’s Yorkshire Day 😜 On this day in 2001 I joined the Royal Air Force 🛫 On this day in 2023 I left the Royal Air Force 🛬 I’ve learned a lot since leaving the military, and one of the biggest lessons is to not underestimate yourself, your abilities or how you’ll ’fit in’ within civvy street. The skills and character traits that most service personnel develop are highly valued, and applicable to businesses and roles you may not have considered. If your service career is coming to an end, or you’re weighing up your options, take the time to evaluate what you want from your future. Time invested early on will pay dividends later in your transition. If you’re an employer in receipt of applications from military personnel and they don’t match the job spec, I assure you they’ll bring traits that can’t be taught. There’s a reason why many companies proactively target service leavers 😉 #happyyorkshireday

Afternoon all, I’ve decided to start attending some networking events in order to start building a much better understanding of what the civilian street job market has to offer - and also to network with people in person for a change! My first event will be on the 18th of Jan, with the Officers’ Association Scotland (details of this event, and other events in the link). To be honest, and I’m not sure why, but I feel slightly nervous. Maybe the name of the group is one of the reasons (I’m not an officer, but I know they encourage all ranks to attend), but probably mainly due to having never attended one of these events before. Sharing this to add another voice to this critically important note... Training and education programs for Veterans are wonderful, but without a sustainable job market, organizations ready to hire into quality roles (that reflect Veteran's experiences and varied education levels), or create pathways for a Veteran's career growth, and/or collaborative partnerships that look beyond just the training and education portion...we have only one piece of the puzzle, and in some cases only optics and little tangible action-oriented or goal-oriented purpose. I am a devotee of lifelong education, and thus training and education for Veterans, but more so as a pathway to fulfilling and meaningful careers and professional life. In there we'll find some the true markers for some serious long-term successes.
