Good advice for benefits

Soldiers in wartime, vets with PTSD, public safety agency employees and the public they serve dealing with daily trauma, courthouses with stressed-out staff and victims, healthcare providers with overworked staff, sick patients and their anxious families, prisons with strained staff and tense convicts, etc., are more and more commonly utilizing emotional support animals. Are base commanders or US military leadership considering utilizing trained ESAs, a shelter cat or dog per enlisted person's dorm, or a small animal facility in that part of the base where single, low-ranking personnel living on base can access these animals, as another tool in the fight against active-duty member depression and suicide, which are long-standing, persistent problems? Results of studies show the physiological and psychological benefits of animals on people (https://lnkd.in/gn7jTRwA), and more and more agencies are integrating ESAs into their services for the benefit of their staff and clients (https://lnkd.in/gT-Uqr74), although there is no definitive proof from studies up to 2019 that pet ownership reduces suicide rates (https://lnkd.in/get2-TqF). Active-duty US service members continue to take their lives (https://lnkd.in/gr4GHrZp) and the military tries to reduce or eliminate it from occurring. Annual suicide prevention events are common on US military bases (https://lnkd.in/gzQ7Tq9k), as are All Calls to address the troops every time a suicide occurs. US military PCS (Permanent Change of Station) guidelines illustrate that military families are allowed pets, and the military supports their moving from station to station with their families and residing at on and off-base housing. Other military-minded people have advocated for pets in suicide prevention (https://lnkd.in/gk_XPESz). There are countless anecdotes of pets providing emotional support to people at critical junctures in their lives, and some very recent stories about the positive impact of pets on their humans' lives including for soldiers (https://lnkd.in/gY52QS-r). It would require a change in regulations and some allocated funding, and there would be some logistical challenges to make ESAs readily accessible to junior enlisted troops, but it's a proven method for reducing stress, and if it prevents one suicide per base per year, well worth the cost and effort.
