Unless you've been blissfully off the grid for the past several days, you've probably heard that Amazon's Prime Day event just took place. The annual summer savings event, which sees millions of products put on sale for 24 hours, has been an ongoing promotion for the retail giant for about a decade. In 2023, Amazon announced it had the best Prime Day event yet. The event, which took place from July 11-12, 2023, brought in a record $12.7 billion in sales. That's up 6.1% compared to 2022, when the event brought in $11.9 billion. And Amazon's continued success with its annual promotion just keeps rolling.

Amazon's most anticipated deal event of the year is here. On Tuesday, the e-commerce giant kicked off Prime Day, its annual two-day promotional event. Prime Day began nine years ago as a way to highlight the value of a Prime membership by offering deals and benefits for members. "When it comes to Prime Day, Amazon still sets the agenda and takes the majority of sales," EMARKETER analyst Sky Canaves told Yahoo Finance. "We expect that US consumers will spend nearly $14 billion online during these two days." Last year, Prime Day brought in $13 billion in sales, with 60% of those sales coming from Amazon, while the rest came from third-party sellers, according to eMarketer. Prime members purchased more than 375 million items during the event last year, Amazon said, making it the "biggest Prime Day event ever." This year's Prime Day is expected to surpass that record. "Walmart is playing a much more aggressive promotional offence, and launching before Amazon’s Prime Day is a smart pre-emptive strike," says Mark Ryski, Author, CEO & Founder of HeadCount Corporation. "Offering discounts on gasoline during the busy summer travel season is an especially good move, as this is one offer Amazon can’t match. Consumers remain in bargain hunt mode as inflation effects linger and all these promotional efforts by Walmart, Target and Amazon will be well received by consumers. The big question is whether these efforts are merely pulling demand forward, or truly stealing share. The answer is probably a little of both."
