This weekend, I spotted Christmas decorations for sale at the supermarket and couldn't help but scoff, Grinch-style, thinking, "It's only September!". However – we're already in the 37th week of the year, and Christmas falls in the 52nd week. That means there are only 15 weeks left – pretty scary, right? Fun Day at Peppa Pig World! Had the best time yesterday taking my friend’s 4-year-old daughter and her friend to Peppa Pig World. The weather held out, and we barely had to wait in any lines – total win! 🎢 Seeing the girls so happy got me thinking about how important it is to create great experiences, whether it’s a fun day out or during the hiring process. As a black PR professional, have you ever felt the need to 'tone down' your personality or communication style to fit into a professional environment? According to the new report, two-thirds of the surveyed PR professionals have had to ‘code-switch’ when applying to roles in communications.

"We need to recruit Black talent! Wanna take a trip to an HBCU?" Sounds familiar? In my 20+ years in Public Relations, this refrain was more commonplace than you'd think. Firms I worked for were always searching for Black talent, though I'm pretty sure we were never hiding. Today, the percentage of Black men in PR is at a mere 3%, which is pretty damn sobering as we prepare to conclude Black History Month. This analysis of the shortage of Black men in PR by Allison Carter is thought-provoking, but I'd like to extend the conversation by focusing on three additional areas of concern. 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 ↳ Prioritize keeping the talent you already have, especially the Black professionals within your organization who may be overlooked despite their potential and contributions. 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝘆 ↳ Black professionals in PR need advocates in their corner, individuals who can represent and support them in important spaces they might not have access to. 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ↳ Embrace the unique perspectives and contributions of individuals from diverse backgrounds, moving beyond the narrow confines of "cultural fit" to a more inclusive "cultural add." I've often felt out of place in PR firms. However, when I was lucky, these companies acknowledged and valued the unique perspective and intangible attributes I brought to the table. So, instead of focusing solely on recruitment drives, let's also concentrate on fostering growth, inclusivity, and respect within our organizations. Thank you PRNEWS and Nicole Schuman for amplifying our efforts and our call to action directed at Observer. Despite sending multiple emails to Observer, we have yet to receive a response, nor has anyone from their team reached out to address our concerns. However, we remain dedicated to our cause and will not let up. The lack of response from Observer is a reflection of the larger issues that plague our industry. As mentioned in the feature, "This is the second time since 2022 that Hold the PRess put Observer on blast for its failure to recognize Black talent and Black-led agencies." We, a group of over 150 Black PR professionals, agency leaders, and allies, stand united in our decision to instruct clients not to participate in Observer-related events and interviews until the organization takes concrete, meaningful steps to address the lack of diversity in its annual PR list.
