With the rapid rise of AI and unprecedented cultural shifts, many in the design industry will find themselves obsolete. The field of industrial design is predicated on conservativeness, uniformity in training and arbitrary standards that discourage adaptation. Furthermore, the act of creation itself has often been egotistically driven and environmentally destructive. Yet, amidst these challenges, there's an opportunity for modern designers to carve their own path. This path is fraught with risks, but when facing an uncertain future, it's crucial for designers to remain hopeful, introspective, and ethically driven. We must abandon outdated principles in favor of a holistic approach that respects all people and things, especially our planet. Step into the future of design with us, where the next chapter of innovation will be charted by the brave few who are willing to look forward, undeterred by the challenges that loom large.

We do not live in a digital world! When we talk about innovation, digital advancements like AI often steal the spotlight. Yet, the world we live in remains fundamentally physical. From your toothbrush in morning, over the laptop you`re reading this on to the buildings we live in, our daily lives are filled with tangible things. The construction industry is a testiment for this reality and while digization of it`s processes is a big driver, we are looking at fundamental transformations through workforce shortages, the need for green buildings or simply changing the way we build. At Wood_Space, a venture we built in partnership with Rubner Timber Engineering, we're at the forefront of this change. Wood_Space is on a mission to make construction as easy, quick, affordable, and sustainable as possible with their prefabricated, modular wooden buildings. Since 2019, they've installed hundreds of these units across Europe, preventing the release of 1,200 tons of CO2 annually. Under the leadership of Thomas Gschwendtner & Stefan Perkmann Berger, the company has seen rapid growth, including a new facility increasing production capacity by 400% and securing a 7-digit investment from Tauros Capital. This year, their success was recognized when they were named PropTech Startup of the year. So, the next time you think about innovation, remember the indispensable impact of the physical world. The 3 most common ways to end up running an architecture practice… (Based on the experiences of other architects) 1️⃣ Bjarke Ingels - BIG: startup young with nothing to lose Bjarke started his journey by gaining valuable experience at another firm before leaping to establish his practice at the age of 27. He gained industry exposure quickly and took his opportunity at a young age. 2️⃣ Dr Ken Shuttleworth - Make: startup once you’ve established your reputation at another company Ken honed his skills and reputation at a prestigious firm and leveraged his expertise to establish his own practice later in life, in his 50s. His journey emphasises the significance of building a solid foundation and leveraging existing networks and contacts. 3️⃣ Patrik Schumacher - Zaha Hadid Architects: take over in a succession plan Patrick's path involved internal growth within an established firm, eventually leading to succession and leadership. His experience underscores the value of collaboration and knowledge sharing within the architectural community. While these stories show different paths to entrepreneurship in architecture, each one reflects the importance of: → Experience → Networking → Seizing opportunities Jon and I started in our early 30s with very little network, this isn’t the easiest route to go down, but was nevertheless a lot and continues to be a lot of fun.
