📣 Carriers have been increasingly relying on vessel ownership to expand their fleets of container vessels in the last few years, at the expense of chartering. Piles of cash accumulated during the Covid bonanza years have given #shipping lines the firepower to buy more vessels for their own account. 📌 This comes at a time when many traditional non-operating owners (NOOs), especially from #Germany, have been in retreat mode, preferring to sell their #ships rather than embark on significant new projects to renew their #fleets. 👉 MSC has been the most striking example of a carrier favouring vessel ownership at the expense of chartering. In the last four years, the shipping line has embarked on a huge #vessel acquisition spree, including 88 newbuildings and a mind-blowing 355 secondhand vessels. While the Geneva-based #carrier had over 60% of its fleet on charter ten years ago, the same figure now applies to owned #tonnage with the number of vessels on charter having fallen to around 36% only based on Alphaliner #data. 📑 Subscribe to Alphaliner Weekly Newsletter https://bit.ly/2Na5HOA #vessels #liner #containershipping #chartering #maritime #shipping #noo #shipowner

Drewry experts highlighted that the Ocean Alliance is set to have the most extensive network and service offerings, contrasting with THE Alliance (THEA), which faces potential setbacks, especially in the Atlantic region where Hapag-Lloyd predominantly manages THEA's services. With Hapag-Lloyd's upcoming transition to the Gemini Cooperation in February next year, THEA will be left with only one Atlantic loop. Drewry also examined the Gemini services, revealing plans for shortened mainline services by carriers like Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. These carriers intend to utilize shuttle ships for delivering cargo to secondary port destinations, employing feeder ships consisting of vessels around the 6,000 TEU range. Chloe Demrovsky, Executive in Residence in Global Economy at the CGA, spoke with Fox News Digital today about the impact of this morning's collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. "Since the widening of deepening of the Panama Canal in 2016, it just became that much more important and capable of docking some of those really large container ships coming out of Asia that could now come through the Panama Canal and go to Baltimore," Demrovsky said. "And from there they can connect with the important trucking routes to service not just the whole country, but in particular the very busy eastern corridor. So it became a really strategically important area for moving a lot of units." Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e5mSpfAD NYU School of Professional Studies

Socal ports dominate the port landscape in the US as everyone knows, but how many jobs it produces nationwide and regionally is great to see...3 million jobs nationally. That is a big number, but not surprising given how cargo moves through LA/LB.
