A real thank you for the impressive high turnout and engagement for our Annual Review last night. Our Chief Executive, Neil Rami, and Chair, Matt Hammond, shared how, collaboratively, we have helped the West Midlands get global recognition and attracted new businesses and opportunities to the region through the theme of ‘Investing in our Futures’. And through our esteemed panel consisting of Tim Johnson, Claire Dunsterville, Elliot Hemes, Joanna Birch, and chaired by the excellent Sally Scott, the audience got a genuine feel of the huge opportunities for collaboration and partnership ahead. Our engaged and supportive PWM partners and prospects, local authority stakeholders and shareholders, also heard from new Mayor of the West Midlands, Richard Parker, on his ambitions and plans for the region - and what happened at his first Downing Street meeting post General Election - through Katie Trout‘s excellent hosted fireside chat. Collaboration was a key theme from all speakers and at the West Midlands Growth Company we will continue to convene, make unique introductions and tell the compelling stories of the region. We continue to be about growth. Good growth. Inclusive growth. Attracting the right kinds of opportunities that improve the lives of people across all our communities. Trusted advisor concept unpacked with The IQ Club thanks for hosting Mills Oakley Stuart Walter for facilitating Lots of confusion between consulting, advisory and executive roles these days. However true guidance, credibility, intimacy, why behind what is the purpose of business and personal journey of the leadership are the foundations. #infinitegame #purpose #startwithwhy #advisory
Stuart Walter and Jon Kenfield had the great pleasure of sponsoring a Conversation on family business succession and making the journey from being a trusted advisor to an effective facilitator. The challenge can be that while we believe we're at the next stage of our career and offering trusted advise the client still perceives you as a trusted consultant. In the coming days The IQ Club will announce a formalised pathway for our members to transition into advisory and board level roles. Thanks also for the contributions of Leo De Bartolo, Thomas Butler, Eugene Fedorchenko LL.M., Paul Carboon MAICD, Clinton Tilley, Don Rankin, Anthony Cooper, Rob Martin, Lawrence Kennedy and Charles Zerafa Once again thanks to Mills Oakley for hosting the event and for being so accommodating.

Why sustainable development in emerging markets is a priority ?
#CHAMPION COLLEAGUE. Meet my colleague Martine Valcin. If anyone understands the role the private sector can play in advancing sustainable development in emerging markets, it’s Martine. Businesses, after all, provide essential goods and services. They spur innovation. They create jobs and support livelihoods, allowing families to thrive and prosper. But for businesses to deliver development impact in all these ways – and more – sound corporate governance is essential. For example, our advisory clients who fully implement our corporate governance recommendations improved their EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) by 108% and increased their revenues by 45% over the time of our engagement. Listen to Martine unlock why corporate governance matters. She has been and remains my go-to expert on the subject. https://lnkd.in/dgfGkZri For more, bookmark: https://lnkd.in/dcV6i7ik

Serving on a government board is an great way to contribute to our community and deal with complex, interesting issues not covered by private sector boards. At the Australian Institute of Company Directors #AustralianGovernanceSummit2024 I shared some of the factors a director should consider when deciding to join a government board: - Type of entity - there are many different types of government boards – some are commercial, others regulatory or advisory, some have a large scope of responsibility and others are limited - Board’s power – the law and government policy may limit the board’s power including its ability to make board appointments, set the strategy and appoint the CEO - Board composition – a set of full skills may not be represented on the board because its membership is prescribed by the law It’s also important to bring to the role tolerance for the opaqueness of government, the both slow and fast nature of government decision making and that the portfolio minister may directly intervene. Contributing your skills and experience to a government board is a very important pursuit. Going into the role with your ‘eyes wide open’ is the best way to make that a rewarding experience.👁️ Thanks to former senior public servant and company director Jane Halton AO PSM FAICD and Australian Public Sector Commissioner Gordon de Brouwer who also joined me on the panel. #boards #leadership #ESG Mark Rigotti Marina Go AM Christian Gergis Larry Marshall Wayne Spanner Fred Grimwade Belinda Rowe Catherine Brenner Lauren Williams Jane Neale Anne Hatton Josephine Sukkar AM Michelle Burke

While the Chair's integrity has to be beyond question, their ability to acquire the best Directors who are fit for the Board, the industry, the growth agenda and the company strategy are critical. Too many CEO's are just not getting the value they seek from the Board and this is where the work has to be done. Tick the box is one thing, delivering shareholder value is what it is about.
In this article written by Matt O'Grady from Fortune, Blenheim Partners Gregory W. Robinson is featured discussing how to find the right board chair. https://lnkd.in/gUWUTStN
