Unpacking philanthropic initiatives such as trust-based philanthropy, system's change, and equitable giving is a challenge, let alone understanding the tensions between them. This insightful article by Anna Hirsch-Holland in Alliance magazine doesn't go as deep as I'd like, but it's a great starting point for further debate and discussion. #philanthropy #systemschange #socialimpact

"The critical issues facing our communities are too important and the need too urgent, to continue to carry out philanthropy in an ad hoc approach – we need to have a cohesive and ambitious vison, a focus on social justice and greater boldness in our aims. This is my call to action to philanthropy practitioners to see philanthropy as more than a transactional act of giving, and see it instead as a profound catalyst for social change." This has whetted my appetite enough to download this report. Sounds like we could learn a lot from the US approach to philanthropy. Exactly like we have a lot to learn from the South American approach to grassroots 'charity'. I applied what I learned in Sao Paolo in 2012 to creating Sharewear Clothing Scheme's horizontal model in 2013/14. South American 'charity' models and US philanthropy models sound like a winning combination for the long-awaited catalyst for real social change. The question is, who is brave enough to go there?
"I sat with these unapologetically bold and brilliant philanthropy practitioners and questioned them about their philosophy, their methodology, their grant making and their aims – my Churchill report is an attempt to capture and share that wisdom with practitioners here in the UK." Transformative Philanthropy: A Manual for Social Change is the latest report to be published by Fozia Irfan OBE and hosted by Why Philanthropy Matters. It not only includes insights from international experts in philanthropy but also provides a useful workbook with practical suggestions for foundations committed to transformative philanthropy. "Our well-being cannot be purchased or healed by more professionals or programs. what we have and what we are is enough. Economically. Politically. Socially. Personally. This is the foundation of the common good narrative." - Peter Block, "Activating the Common Good: Reclaiming Control of Our Collective Well-being" No matter what we are working towards, the outcomes depend on how were bring people together, the connections made, and the relationship that citizens have with each other.
