Yesterday, our CEO Gonçalo Neves-Correia spoke at the event “Africa: Tierra de Oportunidades” (translated into “Africa, Land of Opportunities”) hosted by Afi in Madrid together with María Ángeles León López from Global Social Impact Investments and Jose Villena from COFIDES. During the session, Gonçalo shared insights he has gained while navigating the investment landscape across Africa. He noted, “We have a positive view of the different investment theses available on the continent, driven by demand or natural resources. The key is to build a structure that has realistic, context-specific expectations on both the time horizons and the capital required.” He shared that, “While there is an exaggerated risk perception from international investors when it comes to investing in African countries, risk mitigation remains very important. I encourage those in this space to spend time speaking to stakeholders to understand the ecosystem and solutions.” Thank you to the organisers and to all who attended. We truly enjoyed the conversation and look forward to continuing our engagement on this fascinating topic. “Facts: Africa is the fastest urbanizing continent on the planet. Over the next two decades, African cities will add over 500 million people. By 2040, Africa will host a dozen mega-cities with more than ten million inhabitants each. Addis Ababa, Africa’s fastest-growing city between 2010 and 2019, grew at an eye-popping 9.5% yearly. Dar es Salaam and Kampala weren't far behind at 7.3% and 5.5%, respectively. These cities of opportunity can be found among what global consultancy McKinsey calls Africa’s consistent growers - countries like Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, who have recorded constant growth rates over a generation.” Read this op-ed by our MD Magdi Amin

On September 1, the EU-Angola Sustainable Investment Facilitation Agreement (SIFA) officially entered into force, marking the first-ever EU agreement focused on investment facilitation. The SIFA aims to foster foreign investments that align with sustainable development goals, creating a more transparent, efficient, and predictable business environment in Angola, while promoting sustainable investments from EU businesses. Key Highlights: 1. Investment Facilitation Measures: The agreement enhances the business environment by improving transparency in investment regulations, promoting the use of e-government for authorizations, and increasing stakeholder involvement. These measures are particularly beneficial for both foreign and local investors, including small and medium-sized enterprises. 2. Sustainability Commitments: The SIFA upholds environmental and climate commitments and ensures respect for labor rights, aligning investment facilitation with broader sustainability objectives. 3. Economic Diversification: The agreement is expected to unlock investments in key sectors such as green energy, agri-food value chains, digital innovation, fisheries, logistics, and critical raw materials, contributing to Angola's efforts to diversify its economy beyond fossil fuels. 4. Strengthening EU-Africa Relations: The SIFA is a part of the EU's broader strategy to deepen engagement with Africa, complementing the Africa-EU Global Gateway Investment Package, which aims to support African countries with €150 billion in investments. Next Steps: - The EU and Angola will collaborate to implement the agreement, with the EU providing targeted technical support to promote trade and investment. - A Committee on Investment Facilitation, composed of representatives from both the EU and Angola, will oversee the implementation and work on further enhancing investment relations between the two sides. Background: - Angola is the EU's 5th largest investment destination in Africa, accounting for 8% of EU foreign direct investments in the continent, totaling €21.7 billion in 2022. - The EU remains Angola's main trade and investment partner, reflecting the strong economic ties between the two regions. This landmark agreement demonstrates the EU's commitment to fostering sustainable investment in Africa and sets a precedent for future agreements with other African nations.
