After a conference hiatus over summer, it was great to attend UNICEF's "Children's Lives: International Conference on Children and their Families, using the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys" this week. Among a growing Child Labour regulatory landscape for companies and investors, it’s always insightful and encouraging to see the breadth and depth of new research being carried out in this area. Particularly interesting was a talk on the differences and similarities between income-generating and care and domestic work by Elena Camilletti, Franziska Gassmann, Wim Groot, and Bruno Martorano, who highlighted the importance of accurately defining and differentiating children’s domestic work and Child Labour. Definitions within the field of Child Labour and Human Rights are vital; the distinction between Child Labour and Forced Labour is significant and often misunderstood, leading to the oversight of the former when efforts are concentrated on the latter. The event was organized by the UNICEF MICS Programme and the #BristolPovertyInstitute at the University of Bristol. https://lnkd.in/emZnFVjN #ChildLabour #ChildLabor #Data #ChildRights #BizHumanRights #HumanRights #Technology #StartUps #AI #Innovation #SupplyChains #ResponsibleInvestment #UNICEF #ChildRights #UNICEFMICS #UniversityofBristol

There are two recent publications which are essential reading for anyone interested in policy development for children and young people. Dr Fergal Lynch, Senior Lead, Government and Public Policy Engagement with the Institute for Lifecourse and Society in the University of Galway has published a Case Study in Policy Development in Early Years. It's available to read here: https://lnkd.in/e4hF9UC8 The report was written by the former Secretary General of the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and demystifies the internal workings around policy development and provides useful insights to government, public bodies and civil society on how to deliver impact for children. Yesterday, the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth published a major study by the OECD, 'Together for Children and Young People in Ireland: Towards a New Governance Framework.' Available here: https://lnkd.in/ee_JpFfv Again this study, is a one of a kind, and provides really important insights into policy development, research and accountability for implementation. It comes an important time when the Government has commenced implementing 'Young Ireland' which is the National Policy Framework for Children and Young People. This is available here: https://lnkd.in/emFXdkYr The report is also timely in the run-up to the forthcoming General Election. It's rare to have such a sophisticated insight into policy development, formation, implementation and accountability.

Education is a key social determinant if health.

Imagine a world where ALL children learn. Global research indicates that if all women completed just primary education, child mortality would decrease by one-sixth, maternal deaths would be reduced by two-thirds, and a single year of primary schooling boosts future earnings by 5-15% for boys and 10-20% for girls. Providing education to Africa's children, enabling them to break the poverty cycle and address global challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and conflict, is not only a moral obligation but essential for the future of humanity HAPA UG (Healthcare Access and youth Programming Alliance Ug) #keepchildreninschool
