When people from across Ottawa’s housing and homelessness world get together, we can build a system that works better for everyone. The Moving UPP project brought together nearly 200 local thought-leaders, frontline staff, and people with lived experience of homelessness. Working together, they identified ways that Ottawa’s housing and homelessness systems could use the resources we currently have to build a more effective system that helps get people into homes faster and more easily. At Access Adam Housing, we are dedicated to helping local authorities meet the critical need for fully compliant temporary accommodation. The recent government actions to tackle the homelessness crisis are a significant step in the right direction. However, we acknowledge that there is no quick fix, and a collaborative effort will be essential to address the underlying challenges. Through our strong partnerships with local authorities and our commitment to co-production, we help to empower local authorities to not only offer safer and compliant temporary housing but also establish longer tenancies. This approach is crucial in breaking the cycle of homelessness to offer sustainability and hope to those in need. Curious to find out more? A dude serious about ending homelessness. CEO & President of OrgCode Consulting Inc. YouTuber. Author. Recovering asshole.
If there is organized opposition to homelessness services or supportive housing (NIMBY), expect to see more homelessness in public spaces. Put another way, if people do not want homelessness services or supportive housing in their backyard, there should be a real understanding that it will result in more homelessness in the front yard (for example, parks, sidewalks, waterfronts). Engagement must be clear and nuanced. Consultation should distinguish between information sharing and actual community input. Watch this week's video for insights on a different approach: https://lnkd.in/gFdTPVzu Governments and non-profits need to address concerns from businesses or residents instead of dismissing them in most instances. Acknowledge that while most aspects may be okay, ongoing issues will need attention. Valid concerns, even if uninformed, must be taken seriously. It's crucial to find new ways of engagement and establish a fresh framework. Inaction is not an option. Balancing the needs of those experiencing homelessness with community concerns is essential. Let's work towards a more inclusive and understanding approach. #homelessness #communityengagement #housingcrisis #nimby #notinmybackyard #homelessservices #deliberativedialogue
