Thank you to Sam Trendall for writing this fantastic piece in PublicTechnology ‘The previous government spent far too long concentrating on the doomsday scenarios – and not the opportunities of AI’ As the government shines a light on a range of public sector uses of artificial intelligence, Feryal Clark MP has told PublicTechnology that, unlike its predecessors, her administration is focused on the potential upside of the technology – and not just “doomsday scenarios”. Today marks the publication of 10 new transparency records using the Algorithmic Transparency Recording Standard (ATRS) – a standardised framework which public bodies can use to publish information on their use of algorithms. Among the submissions published today include the use of an algorithm by London Borough of Sutton which collects and analyses information collected by sensors deployed in the homes of vulnerable residents, on items such as fridges, kettles and doors. This technology, from UK software firm The Access Group, is intended to help the borough’s social care professionals “spot changes in behaviour, like missed meals, a skipped cup of tea or whether a door has been left open for too long”, according to government. "One prominent application of AI which can has been demonstrated by the London Borough of Sutton, is where connected devices such as smart kettles and fridge sensors monitor the well-being of elderly residents. These devices identify changes in daily routines, such as missed meals or unusual inactivity, with alerts sent to carers or family members. What are the health tech predictions for 2025? With £2bn promised for NHS tech, a new government, and the upcoming 10-year health plan, 2025 is set to be a pivotal year for digital healthcare. Here’s what the industry expects: 1. Integrated Care Steve Wightman from The Access Group highlights the need for Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) to eliminate siloed systems and create connected ecosystems that link NHS and social care. Aligning frontline digitisation with strategies like Technology Enabled Care (TEC) and promoting preventative care, such as social prescribing, will unlock innovations like AI to improve efficiency and personalise healthcare. 2. Optimising Existing Systems With most NHS providers now using Electronic Patient Records (EPRs), the focus is shifting to optimising systems.
