Preserving original features and characteristics is essential when modernising educational facilities. Our work at the University of Essex’s Colchester Campus exemplifies this, where we designed a wayfinding and signage system that respects the iconic Brutalist and mid-century architecture. 🏫🎓 In collaboration with the University, we crafted signage that complements the existing aesthetic, using strong, modular lines and incorporating sustainable design elements. This included the creations of Essex Modular, a bespoke typeface that was inspired by the campus's existing forms. Each element maintained the integrity of the original design, while supporting students, staff, and visitors as they moved through the evolving spaces. This project underscores how blending a building’s historic character with sustainable design can create functional, meaningful spaces rooted in educational heritage. 🔗 Discover more here - https://lnkd.in/e97XTV2X. 📸 : Jill Tate Photography #CommunicationDesign #EducationEstates #WayfindingAndSignage

Denver's skyline is evolving with buildings that look like they've been carved by nature itself, blending urban living with the great outdoors. 🌿 #Biophilic design, inspired by humans' innate connection to nature, takes root in #Denver's architecture. The city's new One River North apartment tower features a dramatic "canyon" cutting through its facade, terraced balconies, and even a waterfall. Meanwhile, the Populus Hotel boasts an exterior mimicking a grove of aspen trees, #Colorado's iconic natural symbol. These nature-inspired designs aren't just for show. They aim to enhance residents' well-being by bringing elements of the natural world into urban spaces. However, realizing these visions requires innovative #engineering solutions. From prefabricated panels creating canyon-like walls to specially designed concrete mixes for tree-inspired facades, these projects push the boundaries of traditional #construction techniques. The trend extends beyond individual buildings. The Denver Art Museum's "Biophilia: Nature Reimagined" exhibit showcases how designers across various disciplines incorporate natural elements into their work, from furniture to kinetic sculptures. As cities become denser, biophilic design offers a way to maintain our connection to nature. It's not just about aesthetics - biophilic design transcends that. It's about creating urban sanctuaries that satisfy our deep-rooted connection to nature, even amidst the concrete jungle. TL;DR #1 - Biophilic design, inspired by human connection to nature, is emerging in Denver's architecture #2 - One River North features a "canyon" facade, while Populus Hotel mimics aspen trees #3 - These designs aim to enhance well-being by bringing nature into urban spaces #4 - Innovative engineering solutions are required to realize these complex biophilic designs #5 - The trend extends beyond buildings, as shown in a Denver Art Museum exhibit on biophilic design #BiophilicDesign #UrbanArchitecture #DenverSkyline #NatureInspired #InnovativeEngineering

Have you noticed the trend of bleacher stairs in new public buildings like college campuses, museums, or libraries? These broad steps doubling as amphitheater-style seating are becoming increasingly common in modern architecture. However, the design, though stylish, often poses accessibility issues and may not be as practical as intended. Check out the full article to understand why it's crucial to move away from this design. #architecturetrends #commercialfacilities https://lnkd.in/gJ34WBJQ

I just completed my third semester at Kent State University's CAED. Under the guidance of Associate Professor Bill Lucak, I completed the following two projects in Second-year Design Studio 1. “Angled Out” Pied-à-Terre Urban infill site - downtown Kent, OH This project focuses on basic geometries that serve not only as a structural solution but also as a tool for creating dynamic spatial experiences. Emphasizing the outward views of the public would, from a private residence, filter light through the numerous windows and skylights. “Angled Out” features a sculptural quality through the elevational views, by emphasizing the interplay of solid and transparent. “Views: Thick or Thin” Cabin in the Woods Public Pavilion - Fred Fuller Park, Kent, OH This project focuses on exploring the interplay of planes and mass, narrowing in on their relationship to transparency. Through the visual hierarchy of framing, mass, and transparency, varying levels of openness can transform our understanding of space and its interaction with light. “Views: Thick or Thin” plays with the forced ways to view the park and the organization of layered surfaces.

“Kinjal Heights” stands not just as a structure, but as a beacon of contemporary design that not only interacts elegantly with the neighbourhood but also stamps its presence on it. Its unique presence creates a stunning visual contrast that enhances the building's sculptural feel. The interplay of light and shadow with its design elements adds a depth, a feel – a way to experience the spirit of the building, elevating it beyond mere functionality to an artistic statement. Set against the backdrop of a quiet neighborhood, it contributes significantly to the urban landscape by reshaping the skyline with its dynamic silhouette. It's more than just its impressive Facade; it embodies the spirit of innovation and resilience that an urban landmark stands for. It serves as a focal point for both residents and visitors, inviting engagement and exploration with its unique, artistic presence. What are your thoughts on how architectural design can influence the identity of a city? Have some structures left a lasting impression on you? #UrbanDesign #Architecture #Cityscape #SculpturalArchitecture #BuildingInnovation #Viveknandan #VivekNandanArchitects #Art #DesignThinking #indianrealestate

Light can heal or harm, motivate or dissuade. Beyond just illumination, light can create mood, enhance color, and focus on design features. But light is so much more than that. It is an active participant in a space and has specific effects on the body and perception. How does lighting in an interior make us feel and why? Come learn more at the AIANY Interiors Committee's annual panel on accessible design to commemorate the passage of the ADA on Monday, June 3 from 5 to 8 pm at the AIA New York | Center for Architecture. We will investigate the power of light in terms of wellness, accessibility and equity, hearing from designers and researchers about lighting applications across project types. In addition, participants will be invited to explore several immersive experiences installed at the Center for Architecture which demonstrate the latest research in lighting applications. Please join us for this hands-on experience with “Healing Light.” https://lnkd.in/eXT8NAKH #ada #accessibility #inclusivedesign #lighting #design #interiors #wellness #architecture #healing MillerKnoll

In the world of architectural innovation and adaptive reuse, transforming ancient structures into modern, multifunctional spaces is a testament to the dynamic evolution of design philosophy. This project focuses on repurposing a historic castle, transforming it into a contemporary spiritual retreat center. In today's society, spiritual retreat centers play a vital role, offering spiritual and educational services and being a hub for various socio-cultural activities. The design principles for this center encapsulate a holistic approach, integrating elements of spiritual healing, architectural comfort, meticulous space planning, and sociocultural enhancement. #adaptiveresuse The core design strategy revolves around optimizing the castle's primary pathway by ingeniously integrating a staircase system outside the castle walls. This architectural intervention provides seamless access to the castle's interior and fosters a harmonious connection between the retreat's indoor and outdoor spaces. The external accommodations harmonize with the natural topography, utilizing a radial layout that enables future expansion and adaptation. This strategic design allows for the flexible expansion of rooms in subsequent phases, ensuring the retreat's ability to evolve and meet the dynamic needs of its inhabitants. In essence, this project exemplifies a thoughtful blend of historical preservation, innovative design, and functional adaptability. By reimagining the castle as a spiritual sanctuary deeply rooted in its surroundings, this endeavor transcends mere architectural renovation, breathing new life into a centuries-old structure while enriching the fabric of its community.

Polysmiths recently unveiled their latest project, Arch House, which marries Mediterranean design elements with traditional London architecture. The studio aimed to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere that resonates with the client's roots in Gibraltar, highlighted by stunning structural arches and a unique lime plaster finish. The renovation includes an expansive 34-square-meter extension that transforms the home's layout into interconnected spaces filled with light. Reflecting on this project, I remember my own experiences traveling through Mediterranean regions and how their architecture conveys a sense of harmony with nature. The use of natural materials and light in Polysmiths's design truly captures that essence. How do you integrate cultural influences into your design projects? Do you feel that personal experiences play a significant role in architectural choices? It's fascinating to see how design can tell a story and reflect one's background! Polysmiths has not only prioritized aesthetics but also sustainability by minimizing waste during construction. This thoughtful approach is something we should all aim for in our projects.
