I just DMed with an anon insider at QuikTrip. Here's what I learned: - Stores do ~$10m/year on average - The own 18 urgent cares & are making big moves in other verticals - They still offer a pension - Their site selection process is TOP SECRET and very closely held - Almost exclusively hire from within, from the store level when possible - They'll routinely buy land across the street if a new offramp is moving in. Basically, if something happens around a store that may threaten it, they buy more land. - The founder got them to 200 stores and his son got them to 1,100. Both absolute killers. - Their HQ in Tulsa has pictures of employees that have worked there for 20, 30, 40+ years. It's known as an amazing place to work - With rare exception, the only roles they hire outside of the company for are software engineers, data scientists, etc. Stuff you can't learn working behind a counter slangin' jerky and Doritos. During a recent interview for the Founder's Office role at Neoperk Technologies, a candidate asked a thought-provoking question: "What has your experience been like at Neoperk, and what do you enjoy about it?" Sadiya Shaikh and Akshay Malik, who were conducting the interview, shared that one of the most rewarding aspects of their work is witnessing immediate results from their efforts. This not only brings them joy but also allows them the flexibility to learn new skills beyond their defined roles. Reflecting on this, I realize that as a founder and generalist, my experience is a mix of both challenges and rewards. Just yesterday, I was focused on fundraising; today, I'm working on improving our business model; and tomorrow, I’ll be streamlining operations. It feels like a continuous cycle of jumping from one problem to the next, and the thrill of solving these challenges is exhilarating. Hiring my first team member was the most difficult task. Starting ALTRD, I was always worried about hiring. "When is the right time to hire people?" I kept asking myself. Since ALTRD wasn't a product-based company, I thought, "I'll hire when I have enough projects to keep everyone busy." Turns out, I was wrong! I was doing everything myself: finding clients, pitching, and even having meetings. There was barely any time left to actually work on scaling. I realized that this wasn't sustainable. Business is about taking risks. You have to invest a lot in your company before you can hope for a return. I knew I was doing something wrong by playing it too safe. After talking to a couple of my entrepreneur friends, I realized now was the time to start hiring. My first hire was for the founder's office. Sure, that first hire didn't directly bring in revenue, but it lifted a huge burden off me and allowed me to focus on other important aspects of the business. Sometimes the best time to hire is before you feel absolutely overwhelmed. It's all about taking calculated risks and investing in your team's growth.
