Harvard Health Publishing ran a story, authored by Toni Golen (https://lnkd.in/e6v-H_yi) about #berberine, which contained a factual error (she writes: "Since the FDA doesn't regulate dietary supplements, there's no guarantee how much berberine is contained in a product.") The FDA most certainly DOES regulate dietary supplements (see: https://lnkd.in/eXSD9GnK) and reputable manufacturers go to great lengths to achieve 3rd-party certifications with regard to the accuracy of label claims, and are required under regulation to meet 100% of said claims throughout the shelf life of the product. This should be corrected, as it misleads readers and consumers.

Okay, time to change the misconception that dietary supplements are not regulated by the FDA. Registered Dietitians (RDs) are poised to help correct this misinformation and to help educate consumers about the safety and efficacy of these products. To be clear, the FDA does regulate dietary supplements. Manufacturers are legally responsible for ensuring the safety and proper labeling of their products and the FDA monitors compliance. As nutrition professionals, it’s crucial for us to correct such misconceptions. Misunderstandings about regulation can lead people to mistrust all supplements or fail to follow recommended guidelines. By providing accurate information, we can empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and well-being, and help them understand the regulatory environment that governs these products. Education and awareness are key to navigating the complex world of dietary supplements and contributing to optimal health and wellness. #Regulations #FDA #DietarySupplements #RegisteredDietitians https://lnkd.in/gXps_emf
