When efficiently managed, volunteers can make a powerful and lasting impact. From a sector survey on volunteer management (VM) conducted by NCSS in 2021, we found that 63% of the 196 SSAs strongly agree/agree that volunteers took on roles freeing up staff for critical work. A shining example of this influence is evident in the achievements of Care Corner's Community Counselling Unit which is a volunteer-led programme established since 2017. 🌟 Remarkably, in FY22, 45 volunteer counsellors, together with 6 full time staff, facilitated 2,000 sessions with 300 clients. As someone who has recruited and worked with volunteers in the past, I have some useful recommendations to help you attract and retain effective volunteers: 1. Determine if there is a real need for volunteers: Before recruiting volunteers, make sure there is a genuine need for them. Volunteer work should be an extension of an organization's mission, so ensure that the work is meaningful and will have a real impact. 2. Clearly communicate expectations: Let potential volunteers know what is expected of them. Communicate the time commitment, what kind of work they will be doing, and any necessary training or qualifications. 3. Be upfront about financial commitments: If there's no financial commitment available, let them know. It's important to be transparent about any costs associated with volunteering, such as transportation or materials, so that volunteers can make informed decisions about their involvement. 4. Outline the engagement frequency: Let volunteers know how often they will be expected to engage with the organization. Will it be a weekly or monthly commitment? This can help them plan their schedules and ensure that they can commit to the work. 5. Offer an opportunity to ask questions: Give potential volunteers a chance to ask questions and learn more about the organization and the work they will be doing. This can help them feel more comfortable and confident in their decision to volunteer. 6. Provide support and training: Volunteers need support and training to succeed. Provide the necessary resources, training, and support to help them feel confident and valued. 7. Show appreciation: Volunteers are giving their time and effort to your organization. Show your appreciation by recognizing their contributions, providing feedback, and offering opportunities for growth and development.
