For years, West Advisory Group has proudly partnered with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwestern Pennsylvania, working together to alleviate hunger in Erie County and beyond. We’ve witnessed firsthand the devastating impact that food insecurity can have on families and individuals in our region. Hunger doesn’t just mean empty stomachs—it means children struggling to focus in school, parents facing difficult choices between groceries and bills, and seniors who’ve worked their entire lives left without enough to eat. This issue affects the very fabric of our community, and that’s why we’ve made it our mission to take action. Through our long-term partnership with Second Harvest, we’ve seen the incredible difference that consistent support can make. Today is World Day of Social Justice. At Foodbank NSW & ACT, we know there are still many barriers preventing people from accessing the food they need. That’s why we make it our mission to tackle food insecurity and provide our communities with equitable access to food, no matter who you are or where you live. If you work in the anti-hunger field long enough, you'll start to notice common themes in how we talk about and treat people experiencing food insecurity. Americans are generally heavily biased against people who use food assistance, and there are many ways that these attitudes manifest in the policies our anti-hunger organizations set. If we're committed to ending hunger, it's time we examine how our practices may not focus on the issues we think they do.

I live in Arlington, Virginia. It’s a place that's rich in diversity, food, and greenery. It’s also affected by food insecurity, with more than 23,000 people (nearly 10% of the population) not having access to enough food for an active, healthy life. These are just some of the eye-opening facts released this week as part of Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap Study (https://lnkd.in/ep7JimvB) —an annual, comprehensive view of how food insecurity varies across the U.S. As the only national study to provide county-level estimates of food insecurity and food costs, this study is a powerful tool for all of us to use to better understand hunger in our communities. It shows that food insecurity exists in every county, parish and congressional district in this nation, but it isn’t experienced equally. Food insecurity levels vary across regions, influenced by factors like unemployment and poverty rates as well as policies and practices rooted in history that continue to hold people back today. I encourage you to learn about the impact of hunger in your community.
