Neighbourhood working brings together communities and statutory services to improve health and wellbeing. In partnership with Local Trust, we've published case studies with PPL that showcase community-led approaches to health and wellbeing in some of England’s most deprived areas, all united by a commitment to transforming lives 💚 On #WorldHomelessDay, we’re highlighting the work of The Plymouth Alliance, commissioned by Plymouth City Council. It is its whole-person approach which is helping the complex needs of the homeless community in #Plymouth to participate fully in life. The alliance offers housing advice, access to temporary and settled accommodation, and treatment and support for substance abuse, with the primary measure of success being whether someone feels better or worse. In addition: ✅ 149 households have been supported to access privately rented accommodation. ✅ 127 people have accessed night shelter provision. ✅ 111 people have achieved accredited qualifications. ✅ 1,646 people have had structured treatment plans. The seven core service providers are BCHA, Shekinah Mission Plymouth, The Zone Plymouth, Livewell Southwest, Harbour, Path (Plymouth Access to Housing) and Hamoaze. 📣 Mental Health Carers NSW is one of 108 NSW organisations and groups who have made a joint submission with #RaiseTheAgeNSW in #NSWPol to the NSW Government Inquiry into community safety in regional and rural communities. We’re calling on the NSW Government to: 1️⃣ Resource and support Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations to work with First Nations children, families, and communities. 2️⃣ Invest in services that prevent crime from the start. 3️⃣ Fund targeted services and interventions that help kids learn to be accountable, and do better, when they go off track. 4️⃣ Be guided by evidence and #RaiseTheAgeNSW from 10 to at least 14 without exception. We all want communities to be safer. According to a recent article from Read the US News and World Report, ( in the news ) at News AKMI, a new study from the University of Georgia reveals that reducing homelessness by 25% could potentially save around 2,000 lives annually from opioid overdoses, along with hundreds of lives from alcohol and cocaine overdoses. This groundbreaking research highlights the significant impact of homelessness on substance-related deaths, emphasizing the urgent need for effective policies to address both issues. The surge in evictions, particularly following the pandemic, has further exacerbated homelessness, underscoring the critical need for comprehensive solutions. While eviction prevention is crucial, researchers emphasize the importance of addressing underlying housing issues and providing support to vulnerable populations. Ultimately, the study underscores the importance of pragmatic and compassionate policies to address homelessness and substance abuse, emphasizing the need for long-term investments in solutions that prioritize support and assistance for those in need. California's Governor's order to remove homeless camps will affect homeless people, those who work with them, and the community. Here's how: - Impact on the homeless population: many will have to move, losing what little stability they have, some might be arrested or confined, some will get help with housing, healthcare and other services, but how effective this help is will depend on the implementation. - Impact on Workers with the Homeless Population: social workers and organizations may have bigger case loads, there might be changes in funding and resources, either more support is given or the focus will be on enforcement and workers will need to adapt to new systems and procedures, which could cause delays. So what will I be focusing on to help those on my caseload that may be facing these challenges? - I will continue to monitor and check in weekly with my patients who are homeless. - Address the root causes by providing housing resources and employment resources, which will help with economic instability. - Reach out to community based organizations that are implementing and planning strategies to address people's specific needs. - Focus on comprehensive support services: offer mental health care, substance abuse, job training and other services to meet the person's needs. - Self care: these kinds of things can take a toll on those of us who work with the population, so I will make sure to reach out when I need support and continue to work on balancing my work like/personal life, so that I do not get burnt out. Homelessness has become more than a serious issue affecting society. It is also a public health epidemic nationwide. In Los Angeles, the crisis is particularly acute, with more than 69,000 people experiencing homelessness in 2022. For most, the problem appears unsolvable and the best we can hope for is to mitigate it. Ben Henwood, professor and director of the Center for Homelessness, Housing, and Health Equity Research at #USCSocialWork, has a different view. In my over two decades living in Ireland, I've witnessed firsthand the persistent and complex issue of homelessness, a condition influenced by myriad factors such as mental health, addiction, relationshi breakdowns, and more. Working with an organization dedicated to advocating for the homeless, I am constantly reminded of the resilience and struggles of those we aim to support. Recently, I was deeply moved during a visit from corporate volunteers, which reignited my passion and reinforced why I embarked on this journey. It was a poignant moment that made me reflect on my own 22-year residency in Ireland, acknowledging that despite progress, much remains to be done. Our organization is committed to not just addressing the immediate needs of the homeless but also to understanding and combating the root causes. We provide holistic support, education, and mental health assistance, ensuring a comprehensive approach to prevention and care. But our work doesn't stop once someone secures housing. We believe in ongoing support, helping individuals navigate their new lives and ensuring they know they are not forgotten. This continuum of care is vital for lasting change and empowerment. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with dedicated community employees and engagement teams. Their commitment showcases that every effort, every interaction, is a step toward a better future. Witnessing such collective dedication and hard work reaffirms my belief that we are making a meaningful difference, one life at a time. This experience has strengthened my resolve and my belief in the power of community and compassion. This is awesome. For once, it feels like a (more) holistic approach to solving a problem by getting to the root cause. tldr; University Health Network (healthcare) & Fred Victor (NFP housing org) are partnering to provide not just housing, but doctors, psychiatric help, justice help, prepared meals and more, for 51 (homeless) individuals who are frequent ER visitors. The avg homeless patient spends 15.4 days in the hospital and costs $16,800 to treat. More than double the avg person. Why can't we be doing more experiments like these? https://lnkd.in/gN-CCx_V

There’s been much said about billions being spent on homelessness with little result. Please look beyond the headlines to discover the interventions are effective and point to a systemic issue: for every 10 people housed in San Diego County, 16 become homeless. Yes, we need to address mental health and substance use issues, but the bigger problem is the shortage of actual, attainable affordable housing where people can live while on their path to safety, stability and self-sufficiency. With a shortfall of 136,631 affordable rental homes, we need to prioritize affordable housing solutions.
