Is there such a thing as too much innovation? Under certain conditions, it could make sense to ask such a question …or, at least, to ask: is the type of innovation we are currently producing and the way we are doing it what we truly want…without making it a political discussion …rather a discussion on intelligent design and impact, in all its dimensions. My impression is that we do not reflect enough on the qualitative difference between the innovation which is produced by startups when they play the modern startup game and the innovation which is produced by existing firms. Corporates and existing firms can do amazing...but not by trying to do what startups do. They can do amazing when they manage to retain or, at least, not to frustrate #corporateexplorers – those individuals with a mission to build new and disruptive businesses inside their companies. When they and their teams can do their jobs, they can produce remarkable forms of innovation, with considerable impact. We, including myself, are skeptical about the ability of existing firms to innovate. This is probably an assumption which is too simplistic. This is what I learnt by listening to the testimony of great #corporateexplorers, Balaji Bondili, Yoky Matsuoka, and Yusuf J.. Most corporate innovation is a failure. Companies go through the motions, without really changing how they or their employees think. What is prevailing: - Quick Fixes or jugaad to firefight loosing situation in market - Thrust on Small and insignificant improvement to increase efficiencies - Leadership’s short term myopic vision driven by quarterly results - Over dependence on the research and development department This leads to zero visibility to disruptive innovation about to happen due to customers' dynamic needs. Realistically, it takes about 5 years of sustained effort to discover breakthrough disruptive innovation as it is always outside of companies' reach. Hence, leadership needs to drive: - Cultural change from top down - Embrace "Open Innovation" - collaborate and co-create - Mindset change- customer focus than product focus - Capture innovation early to address customer new & latent dynamic needs. Too many corporate companies set up an ‘innovation unit’, hire some Chief Innovation Officer and expedite expensive M&A activities to empty the companies' coffers rather than discovering, nurturing and embracing innovative startups addressing the same or similar needs. In reality, companies need to invest in building an “Open Innovation Platform” to attract, curate and support innovation with knowledge, mentoring, monitoring, and funding startups more than ever before.
