How does the #SIMATIC S7-1500V support the digital transformation and what advantages does the use of a purely virtual PLC offer for the flexible design of production plants? I had the opportunity to talk to Oliver Narr, Value Stream Manager at Siemens Industry, about this. Transformation does not happen in a single day - it is a process. And it is precisely this process that determines success. The first step is planning and design. You need a clear idea of which functionalities are required and what is supported by the suppliers. With the S7-1500 V PLC, you can simply take the existing data from the hardware version and convert it directly into a virtual version. This makes it possible to recognise exactly what is possible right from the start. The planning phase is followed by the test phase. The aim here is to carry out initial proof-of-concepts with a virtual #PLC and gradually move on to real production. Existing code from a hardware PLC can be migrated in a single step. There are also blueprints and performance notes that show where possible limits lie. If necessary, a hardware PLC can run in parallel so that it is possible to switch between virtual and physical PLCs at any time - with just a few clicks. The decisive step is the transition to productive use. This is where #Siemens strengths come to the fore: the virtual SIMATIC PLC is mature, reliable and offers full functionality. APIs allow everything to be configured flexibly, and with the latest development, not only standard PLCs but also fail-safe variants are available for productive use.
