When it comes to women in leadership, it is high time we move from the "why we need" to the "how can we make it happen?" The statistics cited by Shiv in his session in Colombo make for poor reading especially for India Inc. This despite the fact that the country's top banks and financial institutions have a woman at the helm! And indeed the Finance Minister is...a woman. The mandate given to hiring firms to look for women CXOs is frankly not surprising. But I would differ in the reasons...citing gender diversity is a very simplistic way of looking this issue. Business, you see, is not driven by sentiments or emotions. Hard numbers talk and how! A 2019 study found that female leadership was related to organizational innovation. Another study highlighted that women leaders were preferred in crisis situations when organizations were performing poorly as they bring multidimensional approach to problem solving. In summary, crisis seems to bring out the best of innovation and creativity quotient among women leaders. Given these data points, The Economic Times article on mandates for women CXOs makes absolute sense. So how can we make this happen? 1. Open the door: Most organizations pay lip-service to having women in executive roles. This needs to change by regulation that one of your top exec must be a female, otherwise we will continue to have the same dialog for years to come. 2. Open the eyes: Investors are realizing that women bring diverse talents to the table. The routes to organizational success are multiple and women can open up more routes as they multitask effortlessly. 3. Open the purse: Equality in pay scales remains a pipe dream, achieving this can be a game changer for women in leadership roles. The how is definitely difficult, but not impossible. Here's hoping the CXO number moves towards equity this year! #womeninleadership #femaleCXO #LinkedInNewsIndia #innovation #crisisleadership

Why the World needs more Women leaders I did this session at the AIMA event in Colombo. We had 29 wonderful senior women professionals from India, across industries. Women have had challenges in the past mainly due to societal norms and Attitude. I personally believe things are changing with every generation and women have as much of a chance at success as anyone else. This is very true for every new generation of women. Women are good at multitasking, are great at empathy and are able to balance the conflicting needs well. some simple points for them - Always work in the best interests of the company and don't worry about trying to be in the good books of x or y or z in relation to men. Don't make the mistake of starting an Old women's club to combat the Old boys club!! Women need to believe more in their own strengths before others believe in it. My message was simple, SHE for short : Stand up for what you believe Help other women in your sphere to succeed Educate Kids on diversity and inclusion The world will be a better place with more women in senior roles. Representation in public office like parliament/boards etc will need regulation to be complied with. Shiv www.shivshivakumar.com All India Management Association (AIMA)
