Did you notice our name change? 👀 We are pleased to announce that we are now a registered Community Interest Company (CIC) with Companies House. We wanted to register this little endeavour as a 'real life' company for a few reasons: 1. Accountability and transparency. We wouldn't put our trust, time or hard earned money into something without knowing what's being done with it. We don't expect other people to either. 2. Access. A lot of grants and financial support is available only to initiatives that are officially registered as a CIC or charity. We wanted to open more doors for our cause. 3. Commitment. In qualifying for CIC status we have been approved as operating as a company whose aim is to benefit the community. We've passed the ‘community interest test’, and we're committed to continuing to champion the environment, nature, community and education. ✅ Stay tuned for some exciting events in the not-too-distant future... 🚨 According to a recent article from the Guardian, almost half of UK families with children lack the digital skills or devices required to participate in today’s digital world. 📰 The article details the struggles of a family of five sharing one laptop between them. Their 12-year-old daughter needed it to complete her homework, while their 16-year-old daughter needed the laptop for GCSE’s. Without a personal laptop, both children lack the same study resources as their peers. ❤️ It is only possible through your kind donations that our charity can provide a child with the necessary digital resources for academic success. Stories aren’t just a way to connect—they’re hardwired into our brains, making them one of the most powerful tools in fundraising. I’m excited to dive into this topic in an upcoming IDPE masterclass, where we'll explore why narratives resonate so deeply with donors and how you can use them to transform your approach. We’ll uncover the neuroscience behind storytelling, how it triggers emotional responses, builds empathy, and drives action. Whether you're looking to refine your current strategy or start from scratch, this session will give you practical insights to elevate your fundraising efforts. Can’t wait to see you there and unpack the science of powerful storytelling! I’m delighted that we are welcoming Kurstin Finch Gnehm back to The Institute of Development Professionals in Education (IDPE) for a masterclass in storytelling on 1st October delving into the neuroscience behind our attraction to particular narratives and exploring how to harness the power of storytelling in fundraising. Kurstin’s storytelling session was extremely popular at the #IDPE2024 Annual Conference. She brings a breadth of experience from her senior development roles for leading charities and in higher education both in the UK and United States, including with Royal Academy of Music, University of St Andrews and as current Group Head of Philanthropy, Corporate Partnerships and Trusts at The Dog's Trust. We’re excited to revisit this important topic with Kurstin, which is the foundation of our craft as professional fundraisers. If you are considering joining us for this event, you can find further information and view the full programme on our website now: https://lnkd.in/eshEuTUs #IDPEmasterclass #development #masterclass

Friends and colleagues, in 2021, the Kalamazoo Community Foundation recognized that traditional scholarship application timelines, including our own, didn't help students who were facing an urgent need that threatened their ability to complete their academic or trade programs. At that time, we started the Emergency Scholarship Fund, which helps students at critical junctures get the financial support they need while connecting them to our general scholarship resources for more sustainable future support. Half-completing a program doesn't offer much benefit in this world, especially with the accumulation of loan debt and heavy attention to credentials. All year long, this scholarship seeks to address the gap to keep students on track--and it's not limited to universities; colleges, trade programs, and certifications are all supported. Whether it's an overdue tuition bill, a testing fee, textbook costs, course fees to maintain professional licensure, or something else, this fund can help. We've received national recognition for this program and are actively fundraising for it during the month of April, as a generous donor has offered a match of $50,000. Please consider donating to help us raise $100,000--or at least introduce your local community foundation to this innovative model. https://lnkd.in/dmZTCEFm And for those who like numbers: This Emergency Scholarship Fund (ESF) has a pronounced impact on BIPOC students, as over half of our applicants and awardees are BIPOC. 20% of our ESF recipients are single parents, and over 90% of those who received the scholarship were still enrolled or graduated. 66% of recipients were more than halfway through their program, and over one-third were within a year of program completion. Most of us know that typical scholarship support dwindles in the later years, making this scholarship all the more useful.

COOPERATION CHALLENGE ALERT! A fun activity students engaged in the Charity for Change curriculum do to develop cooperation is “The Tallest Tower.” Try it with your students! The Tallest Tower materials needed for each team of 4‐5 students: 20 sticks of uncooked spaghetti, 1 roll of masking tape, 1 yard of string, 1 marshmallow. Challenge Instructions: Group students in teams of 4‐5. Using only these materials, each team must try to build the tallest tower. Every tall tower needs to meet two requirements in order to win: 1) The marshmallow must be at the very top of the tower. 2) The entire structure must be able to stand on its own (no hands or other objects supporting it) for 5 seconds.
