Have you ever seen words and symbols spray painted on a road or sidewalk and wondered what they stood for? These are called utility markings and they are used to help communicate important information about what's underground. The markings are part of a national color-coded system used by workers all over. Before digging, we mark the area so everyone is aware of any hazards. In this photo, we've painted the location where we want to drill and would like to have it cleared (in white). At this location, the utility companies have all marked that there are no conflicts. No SoCal Gas (yellow), No SoCal Edison (red), No EMWD Water (blue), No Fiber Optic or Cable TV (orange). #SiteSafety #RiskManagement

I'm best at answering the green questions. Sometimes I'm alright with blue, or yellow too. I'd be wary of my advice on orange or pink. I might be right, but I'm no expert. Brown is 50/50 for me. If I know it, I'll be bang on, but that's an if. See. I'm fractional. If you've got a fractional resource, you're using it for a specific purpose. If that engagement is growing legs, and the resource you have is now also helping with the earthworks for the new fibre trunking (which they recommended and procured)... It's not bloody fractional. Can I make it any clearer?

I don't know how to set up the total station. I casually admitted this to one of our pipe foremen in explaining why I couldn't help him re-stake one of his elevation hubs that had been destroyed. He was in a pinch and the destruction of the hubs was partially my fault. He was taken aback, not so much from my lack of knowledge of survey equipment, but more so because I readily and honestly admitted a shortcoming. We've all heard it 1000 times--if you don't know something just admit it--you don't need me to tell you this on LinkedIn. What would I have done if I had some working knowledge of the total station but hadn't touched one in a few years? When we have to decide whether or not to take on an uncomfortable but doable job the situation becomes a little more complicated. If you are early in your construction career and eager to add value to your team and gain skills along the way you will most likely need to say "no" at least as often as you say "yes" to learning opportunities (i.e. work) that come your way. Stagnation (from saying no to everything that is not 100% in your wheelhouse) or burnout and failure (saying yes to anything and everything) are no fun for anyone. Saying yes but requesting guidance from someone more knowledgeable is an excellent way to learn but you better make damn sure you have some baseline knowledge of what you are taking on if you go this route. When I first entered the environmental industry jobs were scarce and the competition was fierce; many folks I went to school with didn't get jobs and some never ended up working in this field at all. In effort to give myself an advantage, I researched and applied at companies that didn't have job postings, I tailored every cover letter and resume, and even went as far to hand deliver or paper mail (this got me noticed!) my application. What I didn't realize as a beginner was that there are such great opportunities at energy companies - they can just be hard to find. Positions that invest in you, where you can build your skills to become a confident decision maker faster and more effectively than joining a mega-engineering style consultancy led by teams of specialty biologists (which is where I started and has its benefits, too!). If you are starting your career in the environmental sector - I encourage you to check out the companies that David Hermanson has listed here. Its not just for pipeline contractors - every pipe that goes into the ground has an environmental need before, during, and after construction. Learning the energy industry and how it relates to the environment is not something they teach you in school. Professional Biologists that understand industry and construction practice, along with ecology, are high value team members.
