In June 2023, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced a new delivery model of care focused on increasing access to quality primary care services, called the Making Care Primary Model. This model will be tested as part of the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation, and is focused on strengthening the primary care infrastructure, expanding and accessing care management and care coordination, and leveraging community-based connections to address patients’ health and health-related social needs. Medicaid expansion in North Carolina will benefit all residents. Why? Patient- The member will have access to a network of credentialed practitioners. They are establishing a relationship with a primary care provider and giving them the tools to improve total health. Provider- Resources to help the provider improve the total health of their patient become available, and the provider of care is reimbursed for the services rendered to the patient. Payer(aka health plan or health insurance)- Health plans connect the patient and provider to receive the right care at the right time. Allowing more residents access to a health plan and programs to address the patient's total health needs. These are just brief touchpoints of the direct impact Medicaid expansion will offer to those eligible for the services. Are you able to think of indirect benefits Medicaid expansion delivers?
On the evening of October 2nd the North Carolina budget was enacted - #NCMEDICAID, #NCDHHS now have the authority to move forward with Medicaid expansion. Beginning December 1, 2023, more North Carolinians will be able to get health coverage through NC Medicaid. This will be a game changer for the more than 600,000 people who will be able to access health care and is the most significant investment in the health of our state in decades.
