For everyone inspired by the success of our incredible ParalympicsGB athletes in Paris, this is a great summary of the BPA's commitment to ensuring that the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games deliver lasting social impact, driven by a focus on three core priorities: 1. Enabling equitable access to sport: Focusing on community sport and schools, we will bring change for disabled people in the UK, empowering the disability community to feel confident in and having access to inclusive and accessible sport, physical activity, and PE. 2. Championing disability inclusion: Through our partnerships and networks, we will encourage decision makers to create inclusive and accessible environments that empower disabled people to thrive as an employee, customer or client. 3. Transforming understanding: Through campaigning and influencing, we are seeking to transform the public’s understanding of disability, leading to a significant reduction in the societal barriers that disabled people face in sport and society. It's an excellent read, and feedback very welcome! https://lnkd.in/eY_ecvDp #paralympics #paris2024 #paralympicsGB

Well Channel 4 has done it again - resetting the bar in #authenticrepresentation and digging into the harmful tropes that keep parasport (and disability in general) from achieving parity with the Olympics. I cannot speak highly enough of the team at Channel 4 and their efforts to mainstream disability in all of their programming. This is an example to follow for any company that is truly invested in disability inclusion - there is no summit of this mountain, no end of the road. No 100% scores and no perfection. Disability inclusion in business is, like any other go-to-market strategy, an exercise in humility and constant progress. Brands such as Channel 4 who are able to recognise the improvements they can make and act upon them - and own that imperfection - should be celebrated. Accountability and transparency cultivate trust and recognition within the #disabilitycommunity. #disabilityinclusion the Valuable 500

'At the heart of Every Body Moves is the social model of disability, which recognises that it’s society’s barriers, rather than individual bodies, that disable people....We will champion that unapologetically.' Extract from the blog post mentioned in the ParalympicsGB reply to the open letter (see reply in the image). This is simply not the case for those who are disabled by chronic illness (and some other disabilities). We are disabled by their disease/condition not 'societal barriers' where movement/exercise are concerned. This is why a caveat is needed. ParalympicsGB need to alter their messaging to be more inclusive of ALL disabled people. Blog post here -https://lnkd.in/etE9hAY3 This reply is why my campaign continues. If you want to/are able to help, get in touch. Incredibly powerful points made by Prof Peter Jones in his article - The Paralympic Paradox: Celebrating Sporting Prowess While Overlooking Everyday Potential. "The intense focus on disability during the Paralympic period contrasts sharply with the neglect and invisibility often experienced by people with disabilities in their day-to-day lives. People with disabilities can offer a very wide range of professional skills and contributions, they are capable and willing to make a real contribution to any workforce. They need to be given the same chances as everyone else. The key is to focus on ‘ability’ rather than ‘disability’." https://lnkd.in/eDkQDGQB

The Paralympic Games are more than just a showcase of sporting excellence. But despite all the progress we have seen there is still so much to be done to challenge the many inequalities faced by disabled people in sport and physical activity. Is your club or community organisation welcoming and inclusive? Modern facilities are adapting to be more inclusive, recognising the diverse needs of all participants. According to Paralympics Australia, almost 20% of people in Australia live with a disability, yet only one in four of these people participate in sport. 75% of Australians with disabilities want to engage in sport but feel limited by the opportunities available. Furthermore, while 65-70% of the general population participate in sport at least once a year, only 12.5% of those with severe or profound impairments do so. These statistics highlight the need for inclusive facilities and the significant opportunities to increase participation among people with disabilities. On July 29th 1948, 16 injured UK servicemen and women, all with spinal cord injuries, participated in an archery competition in Stoke Mandeville. Fast forward 76 years, and 4,400 athletes from around the world will compete in 22 sports in Paris, captivating a global TV audience of 4.1 billion people. Yes, that's right... Buckinghamshire is the Birthplace of the Paralympics! The legacy of the Paralympic Games began with Sir Ludwig Guttmann's inspiring work in 1948, and this is something for Buckinghamshire to be immensely proud of. It should inspire everyone in the county to uphold the Paralympic values of Determination, Inspiration, Courage, and Equality. The Paralympic Games showcase the incredible diversity and talent of athletes worldwide. However, in everyday life, disabled individuals still face barriers, often due to societal structures rather than their conditions. The social model of disability emphasises that society must adapt to be more inclusive. Why This Matters to Businesses: - Companies with diverse workforces perform better, with higher productivity and revenues. - Disabled people are less likely to be employed but can bring diverse perspectives and talents. - With 1 in 5 working-age adults having a disability, employers have a largely untapped talent pool to discover. - Inclusive workplaces see increased loyalty and staff retention, meaning lower training and recruitment costs. The Equality Act 2010 protects against discrimination, but true inclusion requires proactive efforts. By adopting inclusive practices, businesses can set examples and reap multiple benefits. The Disability Confident scheme helps employers recruit and retain disabled employees, offering guidance and support. There's no better place than Buckinghamshire to be disability confident!
