Microsoft's AI chatbot, CoPilot AI, has come under scrutiny for sharing misinformation and conspiracy theories about elections. According to a report by WIRED, Copilot provided incorrect information about polling locations, listed outdated candidates, and even displayed images linked to debunked election conspiracies. The chatbot's inaccuracies were not limited to the US elections but also observed in European elections, raising concerns as the 2024 US elections approach. Research by AI Forensics and AlgorithmWatch revealed that Copilot consistently shared inaccurate information about elections in Switzerland and Germany in October, including wrong polling numbers, incorrect election dates, and made-up controversies about candidates. While Microsoft has acknowledged the issues and outlined plans to combat disinformation, the systemic problem of misinformation in Copilot's responses persists.
