What's your experience been like working in science? 🧬🌾🥬🍅🌶️ "I love working in and with nature. My training is diverse and I am closely involved in the development of new vegetable varieties between the greenhouse, trial field and laboratory. It's really exciting to see how good varieties are made even better." - Anna-Lena Hargens, training to become an agricultural technical assistant at Rijk Zwaan Bundesverband Deutscher Pflanzenzüchter e.V. #WomenInScience #GrowingTheFuture

Check this out - exciting Bioresource Processing Alliance (BPA) projects that will get underway. Terrific to see so many innovative businesses coming together and partnering with the AgResearch, The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited, Scion and Callaghan Innovation science, technology and innovation teams. Together we can ensure that residues turn into resources not waste. Interested to explore similar opportunities - talk to our General Manager Nicky Solomon CMInstD. To specifically explore opportunities with Scion - please reach out to Marc Gaugler. #bioeconomy #circularbioeconomy #circulareconomy #biobased #biotech #biotechnology #biomanufacturing #advancedmanufacturing #biorefinery #bioenergy #biomaterials
Great news -- we had seven successful applications in our first funding round for 2024. We’re excited to see how these innovative organisations are going to transform low-value biological by-products into economic opportunities. In this round, we’ve supported all sorts of great projects utilising everything from fungi to kumara, creating additional value from essential oils, replacing imported oils for food production and making novel pet-food ingredients. We’re also thrilled to be supporting a Masters’ student utilising waste crayfish to create a species-specific bait for longline fishing. Our next funding round is now open and closes at midnight on Thursday, 9 May, so you’ve got just over a month to make sure you have your partners and proposals ready to go! Such a great combination of skills to be able to both understand and communicate science!
Audio-Visual Creative and Environment Student. Compositions, Performance; Audio editing and production.
How do we communicate the complexity of scientific research? Is it too easy to oversimplify, or do we run the risk of making science inaccessible if we try to communicate all the details? These were the kind of questions we had to consider for a recent University module on science communication. The module was a huge amount of fun to complete so I thought I’d share with you this short and unashamedly silly song based on some very serious research by Alexa Varah and colleagues from 2020. The paper is titled: “Temperate agroforestry systems provide greater pollination service than monoculture”, which tells you everything you need to know! I apologise in advance for the bee costume… I found it second-hand on eBay! If you’d like to check out the background research on agroforestry and science communication, as well as all the references, you could visit the website I had to create as part of the module. It’s theme is agroforestry in temperate climates, and you can find it here: https://lnkd.in/g-ViaVBt Hope you enjoy it all and let me know what you think!

#womeninscience: Bettina Eichler-Loebermann Bettina is an apl. Prof. Dr. habil. of Agronomy and Crop Science in the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Universität Rostock, Germany. Her areas of expertise are Sustainable Crop Production, #Agroecology, #renewableresources and #bioenergy , Crop Husbandry, and Agriculture in the Tropics. “At school, I was very interested in biology and chemistry, actually wanting to study microbiology. The fact that I ended up studying agronomy was the best thing that could have happened to me as this area offers a broad field of activities which also include microorganisms. The future of agriculture is a key factor for prosperity and development in all parts of the world. In addition, agriculture must become more sustainable: agricultural use takes up around 50% of habitable land and is unfortunately often related to environmental damage. Therefore, I see it as an important task to teach students about these interrelationships, and in my lectures we develop joint concepts for increased sustainability together. I am also involved in research and educational projects dealing with sustainable agriculture - not only in Germany and Europe, but also in Africa and Latin America.” 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱: "I can highly recommend everyone to complete a degree in the field of agronomy and thus contribute to reconciling agriculture, nature conservation and environmental protection."
