Another belting report from Andrew Johnston, Freddie Scarratt, Irina Heckmeier and others on the state of the #InsurTech market for Q3 2023.
Highlights include:
· Global InsurTech funding increased 19.8% quarter on quarter, from $916.71 million in Q2’23 to $1.098 billion in Q3’23.
· Early-stage InsurTech funding increased 24.7% quarter on quarter, from $216.05 million to $269.45 million.
· Q3’23 saw average InsurTech deal sizes dip to a 6-year low.
· Deal share for United States-based InsurTechs at the highest level since Q1’20.
· 15.1% of all Q3’23 InsurTech deals were in the mid-stage expansion category, which is less than long-term InsurTech trends.
· The majority of tech investments from (re)insurers were early-stage for the fifth consecutive quarter.
Beyond the numbers though, I always enjoy reading Andrew's preface for his take on market developments - here's a particular gem from this report:
"Where investors could be more judicious is in the way (and the financial structures via which) they offer capital to InsurTechs. To date, the vast majority of raises have been equity financing rather than debt...the reality, however is that InsurTech (in its broadest spectrum) has not produced the kinds of equity returns investors once hoped for...
"...debt financing requires the repayment of loans, and depends on creditworthiness (if applicable), alongside the consistent ability to check company finances. For an InsurTech, the allure of equity vs debt is clear...however it removes some healthy opportunities to learn prudence if an InsurTech wants to be successful in our industry from day one."

We are pleased to share the Q3 2023 Global InsurTech Report.
The third quarter report provided us with some thought-provoking examples of what change looks like, for both InsurTechs and investors.
We see painful truths, from lessons not learned during InsurTech phase one. However when learned, companies have been able to transition into phase two and play a critical role in preserving the value of reinsurance.
