First up in our CIBBRiNA case study spotlight is Case Study 1 (CS1), which includes small-scale gillnet #fisheries across Sweden, Germany, Poland, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland. Coordinated by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, CS1 is testing out devices meant to minimise bycatch of cetaceans by alerting them to the presence of nets. This includes: ⚙ Pingers: These emit high-frequency sounds which are specifically tuned to warn species such as the harbour porpoise, reducing their chance of becoming entangled. ⚙ Acrylic pearls: These are called “passive acoustic deterrents” because, rather than emitting sounds of their own, they bounce back the echolocations produced by cetaceans – warning them to steer clear of nets. Excitingly, early field trials are already underway in Iceland for CS1. Keen to know when the first results are in from this and our other case studies? IPM, chemical ecology, insect behavior. PhD (in progress): Horticulture, Entomology concentration @Oregon State University.
Check out my spring seminar talk (https://lnkd.in/gwA3sqJv) on potential applications of vibrational communication in pest stink bug species, now on the OSU hort dept website. Can stink bug mating calls be used to disrupt courtship? Improve trap efficacy? I discuss the evidence in my presentation, which is the first half of the May 6th recording (followed by Kelley Asselin discussing lure development for ambrosia beetles).

Wow! ChemBio trade show was really something extra ordinary this year! There was so many people visiting our booth and spending time there. I have no clue how many people I had a chat with, but I enjoyed every second! There was customers I already knew, old colleagues, friends, contacts from competing companies and so many new faces; many of them possible new customers. One of these conversations I'd like to raise and mention here. There was a group of three young lads, high school students, from Halikon lukio. These guys showed remarkable interest and good thinking and discussion over lab field in general, automation, it's effect on lab work, is it a threat or a saviour and so forth. These three lads have a bright future ahead of them! So, shoutout to Halikon lukio! I didn't have chance to tell their teacher how good work they are doing in Halikon lukio, but if any of you know people there, please pass the word. Another thing which is now obvious for me, is that I have a sales side growing in me. It's been there some time already, but it's just getting stronger. How to implement this, I don't know yet. But it's there. #chembiofinland2024 Berner Lab #bernerlab #aftermath

After spending many hours in the lab, I'm finally done with my undergraduate thesis on a new raw goat-skin preservation method to reduce chloride content in tannery wastewater. I'm immensely grateful for the support of my thesis-mate, Piyal Ghosh, without whom I couldn’t have completed this work. And special thanks to my supervisor, Professor Dr. Md. Abul Hashem sir, for his support and guidance throughout this journey. Excited for the next chapter ahead! #ThesisDefense #MilestoneAchieved #UndergraduateResearch"

I would encourage folks interested in Ecosystem Based Fishery Management (EBFM) to take a look at the Lenfest Ocean Program's summary findings report: "Moving from A to B: Guidelines for Practical Ecosystem-Based Fishery Management." I really appreciated their linkage between the indicators that we might use to measure key ecosystem properties and management/decision-making. Anyone involved in EBFM recognizes the legal, regulatory, science, and embedded self-interests in current management frameworks that impede moving to EBFM. I think the Working Group on Benchmarks for Ecosystem Assessment at Lenfest have advanced the cause with both a scientific and practical roadmap. https://lnkd.in/ejVPDi9M

Its not often you see a paper published by 1563 authors.... This paper, which includes two School of Environmental & Animal Sciences kaimahi (Professor Peter de Lange and Andrew Marshall) and Adjunct Associate Professor Dr Dan Blanchon, is one such paper. The paper is a global response from taxonomists to a series of publications seeking to change nomenclature, which underpins the classification of life on this planet. https://lnkd.in/gBd4uxz2
