Having worked for both companies I can see the internal benefits that this marriage will deliver to SES and Intelsat. The bigger question is how will the new company deliver superior value to end users at the right price point. I can see it on the Video side of their business, where direct-to-home satellite TV continues to be the most competitive means to deliver content to eyeballs, especially in markets where the end consumer cannot afford to buy 5 screens, a speedy internet connection and a monthly subscription to Disney+. ‘SESIntelsat’ will remain competitive for a few more years. I have a harder time seeing it on the Data/Networks side. Starlink has about 2.5 million subscribers, growing at approximately 100,000 per month. This is a cash cow that will sustain their accelerated pace of innovation at a speed that is hard to match. They are expanding their market share in Maritime, Aero (In Flight Connectivity) and Government. And their competitors are ‘subsiding’ Starlink by launching their satellites aboard their reusable rockets. They also have a disruptive business model that circumvents a lot of middle layers in the satcom industry. We can also talk about the competitive pressure from OneWeb, Kuiper (if/when) and others, but this post would be too long. Can SESIntelsat build a machine that delivers superior value at a competitive price? They have the financial strength, team and customer base to do so, but the new leadership will have to take bold steps very soon.
In her latest Manifest Space, our Morgan L Brennan speaks with SES Satellites CEO Adel Al-Saleh on the company's move to acquire Intelsat for $3.1B, why scale is critical in the competitive connectivity market and what's next for the sector. "My vision of the industry is going to be a fast-evolving industry...you'll have connectivity that goes across the globe where you'll be connected all the time."

The SES acquisition of Intelsat is a key example of the recent increase in M&As across the defense and space sectors. This strategic move gives SES a strong competitive foothold in the SATCOM market with the versatility of GEO and MEO based satellites to service a wide variety of customers across all areas of the globe. Another related and fast-growing industry trend is the proliferation of mega-LEO constellations and the migration of some SATCOM and ISR platforms to MEO as a hedge against growing threats in LEO and GEO architectures.
In case you missed it! SES Satellites' CEO Adel Al-Saleh shares insights on SES’s game-changing multi-orbit strategy, the $3B Intelsat acquisition, and what’s next for satellite innovation. Watch the latest Commercial Space Transformers episode now: https://lnkd.in/gWT2tKMW

The global small satellite (smallsat) industry continues to exhibit resilience and robust growth, according to Novaspace (Merger of Euroconsult & SpaceTec Partners)’s recently published Prospects for the Small Satellite Market report. Forecasting a market value of approximately $113.3 billion over the next decade, the report underscores the significant expansion potential driven by constellation replenishments and increasingly complex government missions. Alexandre Najjar, lead analyst for the report, emphasized the critical role of constellations in shaping the smallsat market. These systems, which account for 70% of projected smallsat deployments, play a pivotal role in capability-building for emerging space actors and established operators alike. Because most of the spacetech deals we analyzed were not mature enough to fit our investment thesis (launchers, propulsion, in-orbit services, or satcom) 🚀 Because even for those who were, they didn't contain enough differentiating and proprietary technology (satellite manufacturing, remote sensing data services) 🚀 Because the rare candidates with significant revenue and distinctive IP, approached us with an unrealistic and overinflated valuation. 🚀 But we probably will, because #JoltNinja shows that the density of joltable European space scaleups has significantly increased in the past couple of years. We are down-to-earth investors, totally immune to hype, and happy to bide our time. 🚀 (Maxime Mallet joined a panel at the European Space Agency - ESA on Sept. 18th) #space #spacetech #deeptech #satellite #orbit #remotesensing #satcom #privateequity #growthcapital Stefania Ascione Rob Desborough Ossi Tiainen Kais Barmawi

In-space mobility and on-orbit service and supply will mean increase in capability, mission flexibility, and significant savings. Companies receiving awards under OSL’s BALISTA framework include Cognitive Space, Impulse Space, and Starfish Space. In March 2024, OSL released the BALISTA BAA which included areas of interest of in-space mobility and maneuver, on-orbit logistics and sustainability, mission acceleration, artificial intelligence for ground operations, and spacecraft propellant particle count.
Today, NRO's Office of Space Launch announced the award of three Broad Agency Announcements (BAA) for Agile Launch Innovation and Strategic Technology Advancement (BALISTA) contracts to assess and evaluate advanced space technologies. Press release: https://lnkd.in/dywXd6Bi
