It's a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we set our sights high and work together toward a common goal. President John F. Kennedy's words resonate deeply: "Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country." This call to action is a guiding principle for our North Carolina innovation ecosystem. Celebrate the wins! Supporting and guiding students to their first published journal paper and seeing it in print is always a great feeling, and an important milestone for all emerging researchers.  It’s one aspect of being a supervisor I really love. So today, I celebrate Lily Attwood on her first Journal publication. A student’s first journal paper is always a significant milestone and should always be celebrated for the achievement it is. I think this one, though is extra important for many reasons including that this work was started as part of her 4th year engineering honours thesis and the bulk was completed as part of her MPhil. There were many challenges, and setbacks, like her primary supervisor getting a different job (sorry Lily) but with perseverance and resilience this great bit of research is out there for the community, and I couldn’t be prouder. There is another reason that this paper is significant to me. This is my first ever all female authored paper in aerospace engineering, a achievement for many reasons. This milestone has taken me over 20 years to achieve, and the fact that an all-female authored paper on hypersonic is Lily’s first paper gives me even greater reason to celebrate. It’s another indication to me that progress in gender equity is being made. Take a look today at our paper on the thermal-structural response of an analogous vehicle panel under simulated energy deposition effects today. You won’t be disappointed. The work presented in this paper was financially supported by my 2021 Spitfire Memorial Defence Fellowship. Research is a critical part of OSU-Tulsa's identity as part of a land-grant university system. In 2007, OSU officials and community leaders of Tulsa gathered at the million-dollar, state-of-the-art Helmerich Research Center to dedicate the facility aimed at advancing Tulsa's industries and economy. Today, it is home to a bustling research and development ecosystem. The LaunchPad Center for Advanced Air Mobility allows researchers to explore and innovate technologies in aerospace, aviation and unmanned aerial. Through OSU CEAT, students and faculty from the OSU School of Materials Science and Engineering conduct world-class research for industries including aviation, manufacturing, transportation, biomedicine and energy. And undergraduate and graduate receive exceptional STEM education opportunities. Whether it's a conference bringing global space leaders to Tulsa to discuss civilian space travel or an exhibition for researchers to show their latest work in shark bite-resilient clothing—you can find it all at the OSU-Tulsa Helmerich Research Center. Knowledge Week 2023: Outstanding panel discussion about how we can maximize knowledge for impact in today’s rapidly advancing technologies for knowledge production. I’m here to gain insight from industry leaders thinking about how this transfers into K-12 education and what this means for today’s children and our future leaders. I especially appreciated the insight of former NASA Chief Knowledge Officer and Columbia University Lecturer Edward Hoffman as he explicitly talked about a framework for engineering design process that I teach in my STEM Integration course. He speaks about the essential learning that comes from “Impactful failure” which incites deeper learning and the seeking of knowledge… Failure is a motivation to recognize faults in order to work harder for successes… Hoffman also notes that people trust technology/processes/ reports, but they don’t trust other people … if we want to increase success we have to listen to people … everyone on the panel pointed out the importance of qualitative data…

It’s International Women in Engineering Day!    Here’s to all the wonderful women engineers across the globe who have impacted our daily lives and built a stronger future for us all 💪.    To mark the occasion, we want to spotlight three incredible women who have shown that engineering is far from a man’s industry...    👉 Edith Clark    Born in 1883, Edith Clark created the trailblazing Clarke calculator for graphing electrical properties. After using her inheritance to study mathematics at college, she was also the first woman to earn a degree in electrical engineering from MIT in 1919 and later became the first female professor of electrical engineering in America.      👉 Hedy Lamarr    In addition to being a Hollywood actress, Hedy Lamarr was a skilled inventor who set the foundation for modern Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS technologies. It all started during WW2 when she devised a way to encrypt signals and prevent enemy spies from accessing sensitive information.       👉 Yvonne Brill    Born in Canada in 1924, Yvonne Brill was a rocket scientist who significantly contributed to propulsion technology.
