When hiring managers ask this question, they are typically looking for four key insights: 1. Self-awareness: They want to gauge your ability to assess your own strengths accurately. Candidates who can articulate their strengths with clarity and confidence demonstrate self-awareness. 2. Relevance to the Role: They want to understand how your strengths align with the requirements of the position. For a Senior Drilling Engineer, for example, they're looking for technical proficiency and relevant skills in drilling operations. 3. Fit with the Team and Company Culture: Hiring managers are interested in whether your strengths align with the team dynamics and the company's values. Highlighting strengths related to teamwork, problem-solving, or adaptability can indicate compatibility with the company culture. 4. Value Proposition: They want to know how your strengths can contribute to the success of the team and the organization overall. So by asking this question, hiring managers aim to gain deeper insights into your self-awareness, capabilities, potential fit within the organization, and the value you bring to the company. Your answer should demonstrate how your strengths can be leveraged to achieve positive outcomes for the company. Want your job search to be much more effective? Include your hard skills and soft skills in your CV/resume, and in your Linkedin profile. Your SOFT SKILLS are the interpersonal skills and character traits you have, that enable you to communicate and collaborate effectively with others, and to adapt to various situations. Soft skills are usually TRANSFERABLE to other jobs, even if those jobs are completely different. Here are five examples of SOFT SKILLS: 1. communication skills 2. teamwork 3. adaptability 4. leadership 5. time management Your HARD SKILLS are the specific abilities or areas of knowlege you have, that are directly RELATED TO YOUR JOB. They are teachable, and often quantifiable. But usually they are NOT transferable to other jobs. Here are three examples of HARD SKILLS in each of the three main sectors of the oil and gas industry: Upstream:- 1. drilling engineering 2. seismic interpretation 3. offshore operations Midstream:- 1. pipeline design 2. transportation and storage 3. pump and compressor systems Downstream:- 1. refining process operations 2. fuel production and blending 3. petrochemical processing Finally, here are three HARD SKILLS of an oil and gas company CEO: 1. business development 2. mergers and acquisitions 3. stakeholder and investor relations The same applies if you work in renewable energy, nuclear enengy, or power generation, transmission, or distribution. Your CV/resume and your Linkedin profile should contain about forty skills, say 30 hard skills and 10 soft skills. Of course, they must all be RELEVANT to the job you were doing at the time. And ideally, most of them should be in the JOB DESCRIPTION of the job you are applying for. So get cracking, and start compiling a list of YOUR hard and soft skills! And then put them into both your CV/resume and your Linkedin profile. Be sure you really do HAVE the skills, as you may well be questioned about them in the interview.
