This was a difficult podcast to plan, since we wanted to stick to technical topics and reflect on what we (the software industry) should learn from the Horizon scandal. It would be have been easy to stray into wider questions of corporate culture, politics and justice.
It's a lot to fit into a podcast, but I'd like to see plans for large systems universally include:
1. Failure cases, and the plan for reconciliation and rectification.
2. High auditability, as an fundamental requirement of all systems and a basic human right.
3. Good-faith investigation and timely support, from human beings, when things go wrong.
Software engineers know how easy it is for complex software systems to fail. Somehow, in the case of Horizon and the writing of the Post Office's contract with sub-postmasters, the message was wilfully lost. That's the real scandal and tragedy.
The idea that all liability for discrepancies in a system should lie with user, (without good-faith investigation or appeal) is patently ridiculous to software engineers. I hope we can shout about this enough that everyone else involved in applying software systems can understand this too.
