The current ‘decolonisation of global health’ movement is driving a critical examination of the research and practice of global mental health. Despite efforts to promote equity, justice and health for all, colonial frameworks of global health are still embedded in existing ideologies and practices. In our upcoming #MHForAll webinar on Tuesday 26th March, 9AM GMT, we will be joined by expert panellists from India, South Africa, Denmark, Indonesia and more, to delve into this complex issue. The objectives of this webinar are: To offer practical perspectives, ranging from individual practices to institutional structures, on what the decolonisation of global mental health means at this point in time. To educate and enable a space for reflection that can inform what taking action may look like in such a big topic. Date: Tuesday 26th March Time: 9AM GMT | 10AM CET | 11AM CAT | 2:30PM IST https://lnkd.in/eqr2qYFA

Today, on World Mental Health Day we have a crucial opportunity to affirm our commitment to tackling the mental health challenges facing Europe. At AIM, we believe it’s vital to raise our voices 📢 and call for a comprehensive, inclusive EU strategy on mental health 🧠💙. Mental health is a fundamental component of overall well-being and must be treated with the same priority as physical health. Even before the pandemic, one in six people in Europe experienced issues with mental health. Now, the impact of COVID-19, ongoing conflicts, and rapid societal changes have worsened the situation, with young people being particularly vulnerable. Currently, over 20% of adolescents in Europe report symptoms of depression . These realities highlight the urgent need for coordinated action. A Europe-wide strategy is no longer optional—it is essential 🚨. We are pleased to see that mental health is taken up in the Political Guidelines of the next European Commission. On this World Mental Health Day, we call on the European Commission to take decisive steps: support Member States in investing in mental health 🏥 and developing durable care systems to ensure that everyone, regardless of location or circumstance, has access to quality mental health care. Promoting cross-border cooperation on good practices is equally important. Mental health must become a priority across Europe, and it is vital that no one is left behind 🤝. Today in Strasbourg, members of the European Parliament are pushing for a more ambitious mental health strategy, and AIM fully supports their efforts 🙌. We stand with Tilly Metz, @Peter Liese, Olivier Chastel, Tomislav Sokol, @Romana Jerković, and Vlad Voiculescu in their commitment to making mental health a priority 💪. Let’s work towards a future where mental health care in Europe is not a privilege but a right for all 🌍. #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthMatters #EUstrategy #MentalHealthForAll

Building a community of mental health innovators in Asia | Medical doctor specialized in public health | Fostering strong mental health ecosystems via Policy, Innovation, Research and Digital Health Solutions
Were you aware that the World Health Organization's South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions released key mental health frameworks last year? These frameworks provide guidance for crafting, establishing, executing, and monitoring mental health plans and interventions in all settings in Asia-Pacific. These frameworks include recommendations on "Strengthening effective leadership and governance for mental health" and "Embedding mental health into the setting and journeys of daily life". Our MHIN team Shreya Agoramurthy Glen Koh, MPH, CHES collaborated on a blog with both offices, which is now highlighted in the latest MHIN newsletter. If you're passionate about advancing mental health in the region, take a moment to check it out! Link in comments #mentalhealth #asiapacific Mental Health Innovation Network (MHIN)

NEW POLICY: USAID has long supported initiatives that increase access to mental health services. The Agency now elevates this commitment with the launch of a Mental Health Position Paper, USAID’s first policy document related to the integration of mental health into our programs. The Position Paper signals our strong commitment to addressing mental health in development programming, recognizing the central role that mental health plays in advancing the Agency's mission regarding inclusive international development. Positive mental health allows people to more readily cope with stressors and adapt to change. At scale, mental adaptiveness translates into stronger, more resilient communities. In this way, elevating mental health throughout USAID is another way of putting into practice our Agency's mission of advancing a free, peaceful, and prosperous world. On #WorldMentalHealthDay, we are reflecting on ECHO’s mental health programs in Latin America. With eight mental health programs running in the region, health care workers and specialists utilize the ECHO Model to develop mental health services in underserved communities. Together, workers and specialists are building a network of knowledge and collective support. Dr. Sandra Romano, ECHO program coordinator at The University of the Republic in Uruguay, shares, “Many smaller towns and villages lack mental health teams. ECHO helps build capacity so that primary care providers can offer mental health services to the population, in tandem with support from city or urban providers.” To learn more about ECHO mental health programs in Latin America, read our story here➡️: https://lnkd.in/gH69ZHX5

How we screen is critical to closing the maternal mental health equity gap. In the April issue of Health Affairs, Guille Constance et al. share findings showing the effectiveness of text/telephone-based mental health screening and referral systems. Compared to in-person methods, text/telephone-based participants were significantly more likely to screen positive, be referred to treatment, and attend treatment. Digital mental health tools like LTWP (explored in this study) and Canopie play a vital role in breaking down barriers within maternal mental health, especially for BIPOC and rural peripartum populations. Read the full report below and stay tuned for more research highlights this week! #MaternalMentalHealth #ResearchSummaries #DigitalHealth

As May comes to a close, we reflect on Mental Health Month and the efforts we have been leading in Latin America. It provides an opportunity to consider how we can best collaborate to improve the current state of mental health, bringing together both public and private stakeholders. This initiative has been a central focus for us at Viatris in Latin America, particularly during and after the pandemic. In 2023, our Latin America region partnered with Foreign Policy on an issue brief focused on Mental Health in LATAM and we hosted a key meeting with the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) on the sidelines of the PAHO regional meeting. We are committed to transforming dialogue into action by enhancing access to mental health support and treatments. Alongside our regional efforts, we continue to engage with local institutions to collaborate effectively in the countries where we operate. Given the rise in anxiety, depression diagnoses and suicide rates, our work is more crucial than ever. Let's partner to champion mental well-being together! World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 each year, with the goal of raising awareness about mental health issues and mobilizing efforts to support mental health globally. It was initiated by the World Federation for Mental Health in 1992 and is now supported by the World Health Organization (WHO). The day is an opportunity to highlight the importance of mental health care and advocate for better services and policies, aiming to reduce stigma and discrimination around mental health conditions. Each year, the day has a theme to focus global attention on particular aspects of mental health. The theme for 2024 is “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right,” emphasizing the need to prioritize mental health in all sectors of society. It’s a reminder that everyone should have access to mental health care without discrimination or barriers. Many organizations and communities around the world participate in campaigns, events, and activities to promote mental well-being, mental health education, and the importance of early intervention and support.
