We can fix the Housing Crisis AND the Canopy Crisis in WA. There are endless examples in Australia and internationally of smart, sustainable, community focussed housing development that incorporates large trees and makes space for more. But successfully preserving and planting trees during development and infrastructure renewal and upgrading projects requires our State Government to demand best practice rather than the moonscaping that it currently facilitates and encourages. This paper presents a South Australian case study of planning, engineering and urban forestry practices utilised on a large greenfield development site that have allowed mature trees to be retained and new trees to be planted. Mentrus Developments has started work on phase two of ‘Maes y Teirw’ an eco-friendly residential development of 21 homes located on a 2.2-acre brownfield site near Carmarthen. This project, part-funded by a seven-figure loan from us, is transforming a former cattle breeding centre into a sustainable community. The development features 17 four- and five-bedroom homes, along with four affordable three-bedroom properties, all designed with energy efficiency in mind. Each home is equipped with solar panels and air source heat pumps to reduce environmental impact. Maes y Teirw is ideally situated with excellent transport links and a variety of local amenities, making it an attractive option for both families and commuters. The first phase is nearing completion, with two homes sold subject to contract. Construction on phase two is now underway, with internal fixings scheduled for completion by winter 2024/25. 👏 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘄𝗮𝘆 - 𝘀𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹? 🧠 Now, of course something like this should not prevent from mentioning the underlying issues. But at the same time it shows a good way on how to turn a annoyance into something useful. 🏗 From a engineering perspective, I'm not quite sure, these seaweed bricks have the same structural quality compared to something like concrete or "regular" bricks, but that's another story. Maybe someone with more experience can chime in in the comments.
