A Little Late, but overjoyed! Late on Friday night, my team and I were honored with the prize for Outstanding Digital Submission at the Biodesign Challenge 2024, held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Seeing our project showcased on such a prestigious global platform was a humbling experience, reflecting the immense effort we poured into it over the past four months. Our project, titled "Mirage: Eco Solutions from Marble Remnants," explores innovative ways to utilize marble slurry—an industrial waste product—to create sustainable solutions for the local community, including thermal protection. This project's win is a testament to the collective hard work and dedication of so many individuals. First and foremost, I extend my deepest gratitude to our mentor, Mudita Pasari. Your guidance was invaluable, constantly pushing us to think creatively and improve continuously. This achievement would not have been possible without your support and insights. Special thanks to Vatsal Agrawal for your steadfast guidance throughout the project, and Souvik M., who was our voice and advocate, making our projects reach greater heights. 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒚𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 yielded an architectural landmark that seamlessly blends functionality with community engagement. Sydney Design Week, which ran from 15-24 September, proposed an exciting multi-disciplinary program, curated in response to an essay by the French philosopher Bruno Latour. Latour was an advocate for a stronger connection between nature and society, exploring this through an attempt to understand all the complex and intertwined factors that affect this relationship. Amodern, the title of the 2023 Design Week, explored six different areas; Eco Systems, Material Cultures, Communal Cities, Micro Cycles, Connected Threads and Photofields. Individually, they dive deep into the details of how singular ideas can build a sustainable world and society. Together, these focus areas paint a holistic picture of the complexities and opportunities we face as we move forward. Creative directed by Keinton Butler, the design week intended to include as many different voices as possible. Butler noted, “The idea is to open up the discussion around entrenched ideas and narratives about production and consumption and to involve greater Sydney and some of the practices we haven’t worked with before. I think with the sociological and ecological context in which design operates, where designers are tasked with responding to the changing climate, design practices are becoming more cross-disciplinary and complex as a result.” The sentiment puts collaboration and knowledge exchange at the forefront of its exploration - together we can all work for a better future. It might not appear advantageous in the short term, as it may impact profits, but often, with time, it becomes clear that it was the right decision. Why? Because collaborating with those who have a different agenda can lead to more losses than gains.
