Resilience is key!
Let’s talk about an issue that many nurse managers face but don’t always know how to handle—resilience during times of staff shortages. Nurse managers are often tasked with leading through some of the toughest challenges in healthcare. One of the most common—and stressful—scenarios we encounter is dealing with staff shortages. It can feel overwhelming to maintain patient care standards, keep morale high, and manage the day-to-day operations when your team is stretched thin. But this is where resilience comes in. Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back; it’s about adapting and finding strength in the face of adversity. Here are three key strategies to help you build resilience and lead your team through a staffing crisis: 1. Lean into your support system When times are tough, don’t carry the burden alone. Engage with your peers, mentors, and upper management. Sometimes the best solutions come from simply sharing what you’re going through and brainstorming together. Support from colleagues who understand your challenges can help you recharge and gain perspective. 2. Empower your team In times of stress, it’s crucial to build a culture of empowerment. Encourage your nurses to take initiative, delegate tasks wisely, and recognize their strengths. Trusting your team not only reduces your load but also builds their confidence and resilience. When everyone feels valued and supported, they’re more likely to rise to the occasion. 3. Focus on small wins When you’re facing big challenges like staff shortages, it’s easy to get caught up in what’s going wrong. Instead, focus on the small wins. Did a team member go above and beyond? Did a shift run smoother than expected? Celebrate those moments. Recognizing progress, no matter how small, keeps morale up and reminds your team that you’re moving forward, even in tough times. Resilience is about turning adversity into growth. By leaning on support, empowering your team, and celebrating small wins, you can navigate even the toughest staffing challenges with strength and grace. Tomorrow, I get to embark on a new journey as Chief of Staff @ Vira Health. There’s a million things I’m excited for, and plenty of learnings from my job hunt that I’ll share another time. For now, I’ll say this: I’m beyond grateful to have landed the job I wanted in the field I’m passionate about. Part of this outcome is luck: I knew the right people, had the right conversations, and found my way to where I wanted to be. But the other part is intention: I’ve focused on women’s health in the vast majority of my work over the last 14 years – not because anyone told me it was a validated career move or an easy path (it’s certainly not), but because 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜'𝗺 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁. Prioritizing this work, no matter how challenging, gave me the experience and clarity I needed to reach my goals. There are plenty of phrases we use to encourage people to pursue their passions: “Do what you love and the money will follow.” “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” “Follow your heart and everything else will fall into place.” But what these sayings often ignore is that doing what you love is still a lot of hard work. We should keep celebrating each other’s drive to embrace our passions, but we could also do more to recognize (and prepare each other for) the hard work and uncertainty that usually come with it. I’m beyond grateful for where I’ve landed in this transition, but I’m most excited to roll up my sleeves and get back to doing hard work. #newjob #ChiefofStaff #ViraHealth #healthtech #careergrowth #passion #womeninhealthtech #startuplife #healthcare
