Only two things I'd like to add here: Ad 6) Not Making a Data-Driven Decision Yes, do make data-driven decisions, but if your gut feelings say absolutely no, even if you cannot underpin it with data, in my experience, it's a bad idea to hire that person. Ad 7) Not Making a Cultural Fit This is a difficult one. You're not necessarily searching for someone who is absolutely the same as the people you already have. You may want to look for more diversity in your teams and you may hire someone who is expanding/enhancing your company culture. On the other hand, you need to have the trust that the person does work with the core company values [1] [1] Company values are a complex and difficult topic - maybe worth writing a separate article for.

Customers who are willing to talk to you are often the same customers who are willing to grow with you. The principal job of a Customer Success Manager is to share their opportunities for growth. If and only if it could help them. Not in a "let's get you upgraded" way - usually, those opportunities will be within their current tech stack, unless they 1) bought too low or 2) outgrew it (hopefully thanks to you). #customersuccess

A Customer Success Manager has to be more than just a “people person.” When asked why they want to get into CS, many career transitioners have told us “I love relationship building.” Sure, that’s a start… but it’s not enough to become a good #CSM. ______________ When you tell a hiring manager this is your “why,” they may write you off as someone who doesn’t understand the full picture of customer success. Relationships are really only one piece of the equation. You have a people-oriented personality, but how does that really translate to… - Providing an efficient and effective implementation process? - Understanding customer business objectives and outlining a strategy to achieve them? - Proactively checking in to ensure optimal Time-to-Value? Your larger focus should be on driving customer outcomes... Understand customer goals and expectations, develop success plans, identify and address issues and demonstrate value continuously.
