We enjoyed an excellent turnout for our HR Leader event in Glasgow on Wednesday night, with nearly 60 senior people professionals joining us to discuss the importance of having people expertise on corporate boards. It provided an opportunity to hear about CIPD’s recent report on the topic from two of its co-authors – Katie Jacobs and Susannah Haan. Thanks to John Stewart, Director of HR at SSE and Rosemary McGinness (She / Her), Chief People Officer at The Weir Group, who shared insights about their relationships with their respective boards and their wider board experience and skills. There was much for attendees to mull over, but some key takeaways included: - There has certainly been an increase in demand for people expertise on boards, beyond just the traditional RemCo, as a result of recent events – be it Covid or skills and labour shortages. Investors are also increasingly asking about skills, company values and sustainability. - HR involvement can take many forms. It is essential that senior professionals establish a partnership with the Chair and the board, but this does not necessarily have to be an executive role. - Getting external experience on school boards, charities or as trustees is an excellent way to get a different perspective that can be used in your role. It allows you to understand the big picture. - Net zero is increasingly seen as a people issue. Boards and investors are recognising this too. Sustainability credentials are also linked to retention and recruitment – people choose organisations as much as oranisations choose people. -The panel also gave specific tips and suggestions for where to access directorship training at different levels of detail and in different formats (online or in-person). Notes were being taken all around the room! Thank you to everyone who joined us for the event.
