When the devastating wildfires in Lahaina, Maui sent first responders into action, the FirstNet® Response Operations Group™ (ROG) deployed to assist. As a part of public safety’s dedicated FirstNet fleet, we were able to restore critical communications to first responders with deployable network assets. Here's an interesting follow-up to my post yesterday about finding a more sustainable solution for deploying space-based assets for relief on the ground in disaster areas. How about a Space National Guard?

STARLINK IN DISASTER: WHEN TOMORROW IS TOO LATE STARLINKS Needs to be part a Disater Plan when it comes to Acquisition, Training, Pre-positioning, Use, and Demobilization. I have made this my primary focus when it comes to the STARLINK System. If STARLINKS are being received at the point of the disaster without training, system updates, dispersal plans, and power accommodations, the continuity of response may be disrupted and expectations may not be met with the delivery of these systems. https://lnkd.in/gDdVQr7U

T-Mobile is doing everything we can for the communities affected by the Southern California wildfires. 🛰️ 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱: Our network has held up well, but we have generators available to help power any impacted sites in need of repair. We also opened our Starlink service to enable basic and 911 texting as well as wireless emergency alerts. 👨🚒 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀: We have provided our T-Priority service to 350 firefighters in the LAFD to ensure they have reliable, highest priority access to our network as they’re on the frontlines. 🔋 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀: We have mobilized support trucks with free Wi-Fi, 24/7 device charging and other supplies available to anyone, regardless of provider. As devastating wildfires continue to impact Southern California, our satellite imagery is helping first responders and recovery teams tackle the crisis. So far, we have collected nearly 48,000 sq km of imagery of the fires around Los Angeles. “Our constellation of satellites focuses on active disaster areas, using tools like short-wave infrared to provide critical insights to agencies on the ground,” said Jeff Robertson, Chief Operations Officer. “It’s about helping first responders plan logistics, identify fire lines and understand the situation on the ground.” Through our Open Data Program, we provide this vital imagery to FEMA, NOAA and other key agencies to support immediate response and long-term recovery efforts. We remain committed to using technology to make a difference, especially in moments like this. Thanks to CBS News Colorado for highlighting this work.

Satellite networks are much more resilient in a natural disaster or cyberattack compared to cellular services for backup connectivity. The main reason is the infrastructure being above your head :) In a #cyberattack the #cellular networks are usually the first to be affected due to the sheer number of end points that can penetrate into the network and off the shelf devices.

The devastation in California is heartbreaking. Our thoughts are with the people and businesses affected. To the first responders, EMS, and everyone working tirelessly to save lives and contain the fires—thank you. T-Mobile’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) is on the ground ensuring the incredible efforts of first responders and agencies have the connectivity they need. We’re working closely with FEMA, Cal Fire, and local agencies to support communication and restoration efforts. If your organization needs support, reach out—we’re ready to help. Reliable connectivity is critical during emergencies. Overlapping coverage and more than 600 permanent and portable generators have helped restore service to many areas impacted by power loss. Our teams are continuing to refuel and deploy equipment as conditions safely allow. We’ve also activated our T-Mobile Starlink Direct-to-Cellular service in Southern California. This early version supports emergency alerts, SMS, and 911 texting where it’s needed most. For updates on our response, visit: https://t-mo.co/4hcY7uZ. We're here to stand with the communities impacted and support their recovery. #CAWildfires
