The Río Rayo and the Tenerife mine in Tarazá, Bajo Cauca, Colombia, both Swiss Better Gold producers partnering with the Iniciativa Suiza Oro Responsable🇨🇭, promote land recovery, reforestation and a sustainable use of water. The ground is leveled and compacted before being planted with acacias, which also help keeping water in the soil. This generates 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 🐝 and also offers new 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, linked to forestry🌳. "The so-called liability becomes an asset" explains Iván Rodríguez, owner of Río Rayo Mine. "In the 80's, this place looked like Mars. Now, there are pumas and 276 species of birds living here." Sustainable landscaping work enhances the sustainability of the region for the upcoming decades: "We cut trees, work the land, and the plant new trees. So that future generations inherit a better planet than the one we inhabit today. We need to keep working like this. NO. Mining on land is difficult to do in an environmental manner, how will this possibly be done sustainably without destruction of the seabed biodiversity? I have read multiple articles from this budding industry on their approach to the environment and it's not encouraging. Agnico Eagle Mines Limited LaRonde Mine — Environmental Excellence is one of this year's recipients of the Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Awards celebrating excellence and leadership in sustainable development for their transition to filtered tailings management. Since 1988, the LaRonde Complex had been utilizing slurry tailings deposition, reaching maximum storage capacity over the years. Seeking additional storage space became imperative, and after a comprehensive study and stakeholder consultation, a decision to transition to filtered tailings was made. LaRonde is the first Canadian mine to complete the transition of stacking tailings on top of slurry beaches inside of existing tailings storage facilities. Through various key innovations, this approach will help to reduce the environmental footprint, minimize risk, support reclamation, and improve cost management.
