Regional Continuous Improvement Lead at Cargill | Advocate for Inclusion & Growth in the Agriculture, Maritime, and Transportation Industries
Barged grain movements for last week down 45% from 2023 due to river icing. Tow sizes were reduced or movements were fully blocked as ice-gorging occurred or as the huge temperature swings resulted in melting ice chunks floating downriver. This affected everywhere from the Northern Illinois River through the lower Mississippi river. Warmer than usual weather over the past few days led to to very fast ice melt as can be seen in the spike on this St. Louis river level graph from the NWS. This requires operator agility as quickly changing ice and water levels affect not only navigation but terminal operations. More at the USDA Grain Transportation Report: https://lnkd.in/g8D37UwY

Winter storms Ember and Finn cause supply disruptions due to icy travel conditions. The U.S. starts 2024 with the least snow cover since 2003, impacting recently recovered drought-afflicted growers. The ProduceIQ Index is 19% higher than in 2023. Miserly demand keeps oil prices stable, while shipping container rates double due to conflicts and drought. High shipping costs increase pressure on U.S. winter produce prices. BLUEBERRY prices start at a record $27, with supply delays from Chile and Peru. STRAWBERRY prices rise due to rain and cold but are expected to fall by the end of January. LETTUCE prices are below average, while soup-driven commodities remain stable despite frigid weather. ICEBERG LETTUCE is a bargain at $14 for 24ct. A notable deficiency exists in terms of regular reporting and the provision of readily available, up-to-date insights into our own Australian fresh produce industry. This inadequacy stands in stark contrast to the transparency demonstrated by other nations, particularly the USA. The lack of communication raises pertinent questions about the efficacy, courage, and dedication of our fresh produce industry representatives and stakeholders. It is imperative that they enhance communication and transparency to keep their constituents, including Australian growers and the public, well-informed about the current state of our fresh produce industry. This commitment is pivotal for building trust and ensuring success of our fresh produce industry.] ----- https://lnkd.in/g8kkxAGR

That seems to be the battle cry of grain commodity futures traders and farmers everywhere as bulls and bears brace for what is typically a big market moving set of reports that will be released this Friday. Add in the end of the week, the end of the month, the end of the quarter, first notice day for July contracts, delayed corn and soybean planting, major flooding, and a major holiday break next week... and you have the makings of a powder keg! Joe Camp joins me to discuss whether USDA will have the intestinal fortitude to factor in these late changing conditions or simply kick the can down the road again, leaving everyone second guessing the numbers.
