Did you know? 📢HSE only recommend wearing a FFP3 or half mask for ONE HOUR before taking a break! ❓What does this mean to you?🤔 ➡️Do you just need to wear a mask for the odd hazard, such as when cleaning an LEV system for a short period of time? No problem.✅ But... ➡️If your job creates respiratory hazards for a full shift, then realistically taking a break every hour isn't really feasible. ❌ ➡️Also, we've been hearing comments by numerous safety officers saying they've been advised to only wear masks up to 4 hours of an 8 hour shift, and even some who say masks aren't the best choice of protection if worn for more than an hour per shift! ❌ ❓What's the answer when respiratory protection is needed for a long length of time? 👉Powered Respiratory Equipment (Otherwise known as PAPR or Air-Fed Respirators) Was this useful? #mfsafety #healthandsafety #poweredrespiratory

Respiratory Protection – If you don’t require respirators for workplace hazards but you supply (or employees supply) their filtering facepiece respirator, N95 or similar; you still need to educate your employees on respiratory protection. OSHA requires that you provide Appendix D to all employees and document this receipt. An annual review of this information is not required. Still, the respiratory standard says that retraining should be completed if the respirator type, style, or brand changes or if employees' knowledge or understanding of the policy is lacking. Having PPE mandated on sites ensures workers are adequately protected from potential risk or harm. 👷♂️👷♀️ When it comes to respiratory health, it's the unseen airborne contamination or hazards that have the highest potential to cause long-term health effects. ☢ 💠Do we need to add respiratory protection as everyday PPE on signs? We are not by any means implying that workers should wear respirators as they do their hard hats and steel caps boots. 🚫 It is common knowledge that respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is only worn when conducting certain tasks, jobs, or within designated exclusion zones and/or areas. RPE signs are displayed on exclusion zones and/or areas where respirators are enforced. ⚠ 💠What we are more wanting to know is..... Is it worth trying to normalise RPE by having it visually displayed on signs and around sites for when RPE wear is appropriate or enforceable? On a great many occasions i encounter situations where workers continue to share PPE ensembles between shifts. Whether it be emergency responders sharing self contained breathing apparatus, or the trades sharing one set of arc flash protective clothing. This is wrong on so many levels. 1. PPE, in all the forms it takes, must be sized specifically to the sizing needs of every individual. In fact an incorrect fit can have dire consequences for every current or potential user. 2. We are in the middle of a pandemic (and let us not forget SARS in 2003). The notion of workers sharing the same SCBA masks or arc flash ensemble, when measured against the risk of spreading disease or illness,, should unsettle all of us. We can discuss cleaning and disinfection options, but how would we ever know that process has actually worked. I am interested in the thoughts and feedback from other safety professionals on this topic.
