Can tourism combine protection of the environment and benefit to local communities? We acknowledge that a shift to conscious and sustainable tourism is needed, but… ❓ What is Sustainable Tourism? Let us think of three aspects: 🌿 the environment, 📈 the economy and 🎭 culture. Motivated to strike the right balance of their effects on these key aspects, touristic activities can be designed in a way that ensures their harmonious implementation in the long run, thus being sustainable. Inversely, Sustainable tourism can be a vehicle for raising awareness to protect local culture, take care of the environment and benefit local economies, by fostering positive behaviour of travellers. #TOURISMO acknowledges that a shift to conscious and sustainable tourism requires innovative approaches, participation of various ecosystem stakeholders, an improvement of the tourist experience & a stronger engagement of end users. And this is part of our mission; to provide insights to support this tourism model. ➡ What’s related? #TOURISMO #InterregEuroMED #SustainableTourism #Overtourism #Innovation #TourismManagement #Mediterranean #AdvancedTechnologies Interreg Euro-MED Programme Sustainable Tourism ⏩ Who we are: Development Agency of South Aegean Region -READ S.A. During Tina's TED Talk in 2021, we were reminded that tourism isn't just "on the line" — it's at the forefront of transformative change. Even though much has evolved since then, one thing remains clear: we're on a journey to redefine the way we approach tourism, from attracting visitors to fostering sustainable growth in our destinations. In our latest blog post, we delve into the crucial concept of shifting paradigms for sustainable tourism growth. From empowering communities to preserving natural resources, each theme holds the key to creating a brighter, more resilient future for tourism. However, we can no longer be observers; we need to be catalysts for change. It's up to us to take the lessons learned and translate them into actionable strategies that drive meaningful impact in our communities, which is the emphasis of our 12-week certificate programme for Tourism Destinations. 🌍 Celebrating World Tourism Day🌍 Today, we reflect on the profound impact tourism has on economies and communities. During our May It Bee event, Ms. Kazumi Ogawa emphasized the critical role of sustainable tourism in creating a positive future. Tourism is a powerful socio-economic force, but its challenges—such as over-tourism—require us to rethink how we approach it. It’s not just about WHAT we do, but HOW we do it. Tourism has the potential to contribute significantly to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development addressing goals like sustainable economic growth, responsible consumption, and marine conservation. To ensure tourism benefits everyone, we need collaboration among governments, local communities, businesses, and travelers. Let’s work together to make tourism a force for positive change! 💚 #WorldTourismDay #SustainableTourism #MayItBee #2030Agenda #SustainableDevelopment #CollaborationForChange UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme)

Evaluation Process: Villages will be assessed by an independent Advisory Board in nine key areas: - Cultural and Natural Resources - Promotion and Conservation of Cultural Resources - Economic Sustainability - Social Sustainability - Environmental Sustainability - Tourism Development and Value Chain Integration - Governance and Prioritisation of Tourism - Infrastructure and Connectivity - Health, Safety, and Security 🔔 The villages recognised as Best Tourism Villages and those selected for the Upgrade Programme will be announced in the fourth quarter of the year.
