Townsend Public Affairs is excited to announce that once again we have been ranked among the top ten lobbying firms registered in the State of California! The Secretary of State officially reported TPA as the seventh (7th) largest advocacy firm in California, in terms of revenue received and reported for the sixth quarter of the 2023-2024 Legislative Session. TPA is honored to provide legislative advocacy and grant writing services to public agencies and nonprofit organizations throughout the state. This is such important and misunderstood work. If you're unfamiliar, get informed on the issues and learn how to support at https://lnkd.in/gVX-BVv6
One of Sealaska's top policy and advocacy priorities is seeking justice for Landless communities. Alaska Natives Without Land are currently fighting for passage of the “Unrecognized Southeast Alaska Native Communities Recognition and Compensation Act” in both chambers of Congress. Director Richard Rinehart, who hails from the landless community of Wrangell, testified in favor of this legislation before Congress in early December. We are immensely appreciative of his advocacy and message, and that of all those working to right this historic injustice. This movement currently has great momentum, and we are hopeful for a resolution in the coming months - but in order to make further progress, your help is needed. Please contact your congressional delegation to express your support for the Unrecognized Southeast Alaska Native Communities Recognition and Compensation Act (H.R. 4748 on the House side, and S. 1889 in the Senate) and sign the petition here: https://lnkd.in/gmybSsWa. Taking action is especially important for shareholders outside of Alaska, as Alaska's congressional delegation is already in full support. Please raise your voice to help restore land rights for our Landless relatives! Sealaska is a proud supporter of Alaska Natives Without Land.

Opening it up to the floor, primarily (but not exclusively) for my litigator friends. I am co-chairing an Advocacy Hour for The Advocates' Society on October 31st on the topic of Managing Stage Fright. Do any of you advocates suffer from nervousness or anxiety when it comes to oral advocacy? If so, what are the main sources of your anxiety? Fielding questions from the bench on a motion or trial? Not being as confident as you'd like about the area of the law at issue? Worried about dealing with aggressive counsel on the other side? What are some tips and tricks that you use to help combat these sorts of feelings? All of these topics and more to be discussed at the seminar, which you can sign up for at the link below. https://lnkd.in/gHaxSwEW

Did you know that in Illinois the courts (including the Juvenile Detention Centers) are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act? As the most powerful branch of government, it is past time to shine a light on the judicial branch, to ensure the courts (and Juvenile Detention Centers) are upholding the principles of equity, accountability and efficacy. And yet after two years of trying, our lawmakers continue to block even a hearing on why it's so important to move the courts - and how they operate - out of the shadows. When they won't give you a hearing in Springfield, take the hearing to the people! I hope you'll join us for an important conversation that impacts us all. Learn more and register here: https://lnkd.in/gFF8eRHq “Every day, thousands of people enter courthouses across Illinois seeking justice. They might be asking for protection from an abuser, fighting to keep their home, working to keep custody of their children, or navigating a criminal case as a victim or a defendant [They might be a child being held at the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center]. We know the court system has historically favored people with wealth and racial privilege and disproportionately harmed those without. But we can only fight for a more fair and just court system if we have complete information about the workings of the courts. Without transparency, it’s impossible to have true accountability.” - Jonah Newman, Injustice Watch #transparency #accountability #courtsmatter #justice Briana Payton Jonah Newman Curtis J. Tarver II Bradly Johnson MPA Adam M. Alonso
We're hosting a panel from 12-1:30 p.m. on April 25 with Common Cause Illinois at BUILD Chicago Community Center to explore how Illinois Courts impact the lives of everyday people and why it is time they are subject to FOIA. Panelists include Rep. Curtis Tarver II, Illinois State Representative; Briana Peyton, Director for Policy & Advocacy at the Chicago Appleseed Center for Fair Courts; and Jonah Newman, Injustice Watch Editor. BGA Policy Analyst Sophia Van Pelt will be moderating. Learn more and register here: https://lnkd.in/gFF8eRHq

History in the making! The BCAS successfully convened the Global Strategic Litigation and Advocacy event during the third session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent. The event, held in Geneva on April 16, 2024, brought together an international cadre of lawyers, academics, activists and other civil society actors from 20 countries, culminating in the announcement of the Global Strategic Litigation and Advocacy Network. The network aims to champion systemic change through legal avenues to secure reparations and promote equity for people of African descent worldwide. “After a decade, our persistent calls for reparations continue to be overlooked. The old ways of requesting reparations have not worked. It is not enough to ask those who oppress us to right their wrongs; we must demand it, enforce it through the power of strategic litigation paired with relentless advocacy” Nicholas Marcus Thompson CEO, BCAS. Interested individuals and organizations around the world can join the network here: https://lnkd.in/eAtTbsag Learn more https://lnkd.in/epyBvFzw
