No one understands the importance of a career in the trades better than we do, and we are thrilled to welcome two new members to the TP Mechanical team! Join us in congratulating Brogan, a junior at East Central High School, and Tristan, a junior at the Career and Technical Education Center of East Central High School, on their signing day with TP. They will work with us full-time this summer and plan to join our apprenticeship program after graduation.

Is underpinning knowledge a dead concept in vocational training. There have been several academic papers written over the years looking to define underpinning knowledge, and some current practices would indicate it is not understood. If an apprentice demonstrates he or she can create and maintain a vacuum of below 500 microns, does this indicate they have a deep understanding of why this is required, and the system consequence of poor evacuation practices. Why does the training package still require a electrical/refrigeration apprentices to use a file, hacksaw and tap a thread when there are multiple cordless power tools that perform the same function. Clearly because it develops basic hand skills and an underpinning knowledge of mechanical concepts. The examples are endless and in every unit of competence. Will the skills gap ever be closed if a true depth of knowledge is not developed and assessed during an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships have been around since the Middle Ages in Europe, a concept where the experienced pass on their knowledge and skills to the inexperienced. This no longer seems to be a valued partnership in a world of constant change and disruption. You definitely need innovation to drive change but innovation requires depth of knowledge.

If you or anyone you know get an email that looks like the one screenshot below, it is probably a scam. Thermal Insulation Engineers do a bona fide apprenticeship and attend college. A £30 course has to be a scam! Some points to ponder 🤔 1) What will you do with the certificate they give you? It won't get you a job. 2) You'll be 30 quid down and even more disillusioned than you were before you did the course 3) If you really want into the insulation industry, contact insulation contractors and ask them for an apprenticeship Please don't be taken in by yet another worthless course

As we near the end of National Apprenticeship Week, Dan Aston shares his pathway to finding out what he was passionate about. "I left school at 16 and started working on building sites as brick layers labourer. After two years of site work where I was able to experience different trades, I pursued my interest in electrical engineering with an electrical apprenticeship. Following four years on site, I became a trainee electrical engineer completing my ONC and HNC in building services. I now produce the electrical designs for buildings and have worked at Ramboll for three years. "For anyone considering an apprenticeship, I would advise them to have a clear goal or output of what they want out of the course, whether that be to aid them in their direct career path or help them understand what others around them expect from their job role. Secondly, it’s crucial your employer and line manager buy in and agree with the apprenticeship. Having a good mentor or role model is key for success. Your time will need to be split across your workload and the apprenticeship, being exposed to new experiences to practise your lessons learnt". A real conversation that happened between a newly qualified electrician and our head instructor: “Is that cable tray up yet?“ “No. I don’t know how to fix it to the ceiling” “What?” “I’ve never been shown” Clearly there’s a gap somewhere. Maybe in the apprenticeship curriculum? Maybe it’s people on site is not making the time to show improvers new things? PEIT was founded to fix this. Our courses are tailored for the individual whether they need to bridge the gap between theory and practical experience and make up for any holes in their education as an electrician, or whether need advance their skills further than what they learnt on their apprenticeship. If you’re interested in sending an employee on a course with us, or attending a course yourself, get in contact with us at info@peit.co.uk
