Coffee Tip of the Week - Only Buy Coffee w/ Roast Date on the Bag The problem with buying coffee from supermarkets is that beans will sit there for months after their roast date, assuming the vacuum-sealed bags even mention a roast date. Many bags will provide only a “use by” or “best by” date, which may promise that the coffee will be good for months into the future. This is technically true, as you can brew coffee many months after its roast date, and it will still taste like coffee. It won’t harm you, but it won’t taste as it should. Bottom line: look for roast dates, and buy coffee that has been roasted within two weeks of your purchase. If the beans were roasted several weeks (or many months) earlier, find a different bag. Or, better yet, buy your beans at AltruisticJoe.com & your beans will be freshly roasted right before they ship with the date clearly stamped on every bag! Soon, it’ll be ‘Porter Season’) Porter a variant of brown ale that's defined by its smooth medium body, a malted character, and confectionary flourishes ranging from nuts and chocolate to strong coffee. Yum. My senses of smell and taste are already fully-engaged and other-worldly intoxicated. Once a relic of back-breaking drudgery, nowadays the porter remains in ample rotation at microbreweries and taprooms. But between the shadowy color and mocha-esque flavoring, beer aficionados may have a hard time telling it apart from its close cousin — the stout. Think Guinness. To review … Key differences between Porters and Stouts: 🔸Grain type: Porters use primarily malted barley, while stouts use a higher proportion of unmalted roasted barley. 🔸Flavor profile: Porters have a more balanced, slightly sweet malt character with hints of chocolate and coffee, whereas stouts have a stronger roasted, coffee-like flavor. Porters are perfect for sitting around a firepit on a cool, crisp fall evening with friends, or in front of a fireplace on a cold winter’s eve with your forever soulmate. 🔸Body: Porters are usually considered lighter in body compared to stouts. “How you do anything is how you do everything.” - Katie Bernstein’s dad This quote was featured on a Stumptown Coffee Roasters video that I used to show prospective customers. I must’ve heard it at least 100 times and it’s become a part of my regular mantra in life. These beans that were pulled out of a retail bag of coffee from an independent roaster that I will not name made me think of why Stumptown selected that quote for their video. I imagine that whomever was roasting, blending, or bagging this coffee just assumed it was another 5 beans in a bag of many others and no one would know or care about them. Unfortunately the cup quality suffered from that assumption and I have to imagine they must know this is what their blends look & taste like. Aiming for quality means bringing rigor into the smallest aspects of your process. When corners are cut or the attitude is “it’s all fine cuz who cares?! No one will notice.” We’ve already missed the mark. Let’s keep the special in specialty coffee. It matters to our customers and the longevity of our community. What do you think? Muffin and cake are essentially the same thing, but are perceived differently. April Dunford's recent experience at a Tim Horton's coffee shop provides an excellent case study on #productpositioning. While waiting in line, Dunford noticed a customer ordering the double chocolate salted caramel muffin. The item in question was essentially a piece of double chocolate caramel cake, but by presenting it as a muffin, its entire persona changed. Labeling it as a muffin made it a perfectly acceptable breakfast choice, shifting its comparison base from desserts like ice cream and tiramisu to other breakfast staples like bagels and donuts. The physical product didn't change, but its market positioning did. By shifting the context, everything from the customer's perceived value of the product to the competitive landscape it occupies can be altered. This clever twist is a reminder that our perceptions and assumptions can be shaped significantly by the context in which a product is presented. The key lesson: the same item can be perceived in dramatically different ways depending on how it's positioned. So, next time you order a double chocolate salted caramel muffin, remember the power of product positioning.
