🌊 The tide is turning on digital trade finance: Ride the wave or be swept out to sea? 📊 Digital trade finance has been top of mind for years, but most will agree that 2024 has seen a significant shift in mindset towards adoption. 📜 While the pandemic underscored the need for digital solutions, the trade finance sector has remained fragmented, burdened by paper-heavy processes, and hesitant to fully embrace change. However, 2024 saw substantial progress, with several key developments accelerating the widespread adoption of trade finance software. 🗣️ “This is the beginning of a new and very promising journey in digitalising bank guarantees,” commented Marie-Laurence Faure-Lepetit, Head of Digital Trade Channels at BNP Paribas. 🏦 Enno-Burghard Weitzel, Surecomp’s Chief Solutions Officer, highlighted how embedding AI into digital trade finance will be “instrumental” in empowering customers, as they “enable banks to automate a repetitive, time-consuming verification task which was previously causing massive delays in guarantee issuance.” 📖 Read the article by following the link in the comments section below ⬇️ #digitaltrade #tradetech #fintech #AI #API #tradefinance

BAFT (Bankers Association for Finance and Trade) has released the white paper, “Uneven Regulations in the Payments Industry”, to shed light on the disparities and challenges in regulatory frameworks governing the global #payments landscape. This comprehensive publication offers a deep dive into the complexities of payment #regulation and its implications for financial institutions, #fintech firms, regulators, and consumers alike. This white paper presents a comprehensive analysis of payment regulations by examining the different approaches adopted by regulatory bodies in various jurisdictions across the globe. It covers a broad range of regulatory frameworks governing various payment instruments, including digital wallets, real-time payments, cross-border transactions, and cards. The paper also provides insights into the emerging fintech regulations and traditional banking regulations that govern these payment methods. It also explores the fragmentation, duplicative requirements, and conflicting mandates in existing regulation that hinder interoperability and innovation in the payments ecosystem. It offers an analysis of the compliance burden, operational costs, and market access barriers imposed by divergent regulatory requirements and how these uneven regulations impact financial institutions, fintech firms, payment service providers, and consumers. It also discusses the implications for competition, consumer protection, and financial inclusion in an increasingly globalized payments landscape. The paper explores ways in which regulatory bodies can collaborate at the domestic, regional, and international levels to promote regulatory convergence and streamline compliance processes. It also provides practical recommendations to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of payment regulation. Finally, the paper calls for industry stakeholders to work towards creating an inclusive, competitive, and fair environment for consumers, while still maintaining provider profitability and sustainability.

The extent to which financial technology will shape the #banking industry depends in part on the nature of competition for banking services that arises from #innovation by incumbent #banks and the entry of new players. This Bank for International Settlements – BIS paper presents a review of the growing body of economic literature on #FinTech and competition for banking services. The review highlights that fintech has spurred innovation and competition across banking services including in #payments, #lending, #deposit taking and #advisory services. Research finds that entry by new fintech-based service providers has expanded access to financial services and put pressure on the market share and pricing power of incumbent banks. The evidence also suggests that fintech-based firms that started out as lenders or payments providers have evolved to offer a broader range of services. The authors cannot fully know how ongoing innovation will affect business models, but so far, the literature highlights some enduring strengths for the model that bundles a variety of banking services in a single firm, ie, a bank.
